Responsibilities This position serves as a Park Ranger for the Green River District. Oversees the Price Field Office’s Special Recreation Permit (SRP) program, including the Desolation Canyon permits and commercial, competitive and organized group permits. Participates in developed and dispersed recreation site and facility maintenance. Maintains and improves the tracking systems for the SRP issuance and use within the field office including the wilderness areas. Prepares National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation and maps for authorization of SRP on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land including SRPs within the several wilderness areas Collects, records and reports fees. Works extensively with Recreation.gov for SRP management. Maintains sign inventory and orders. Patrols wilderness areas to detect and deal with inappropriate or unauthorized uses. Works with and trains permanent, seasonal and volunteer staff on maintenance of recreation areas and facilities. Offers information and education to visitors. Maintains back country campsites. To qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Qualifying specialized experience includes: inspecting and/or monitoring compliance of special recreation permits (SRP); completing monitoring or maintenance of sites and facilities; completing record keeping; and creating interpretive materials such as public presentations or information kiosks, web pages or social media. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. Physical Demands: Work occurs both in a typical office setting and in the field. Typically, the incumbent sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. Field works requires moderate to arduous physical activity. The majority of field work is associated with SRP monitoring, and resource management. The incumbent may also use snowmobiles, ATVs and mountain bikes off-road and may be required to hike in difficult terrain. At times, the incumbent may assist in projects that involve physical labor, such as fence building or recreation site construction. Must be able to lift 30 pounds to shoulder height. Work Environment: Office work is conducted in typical office setting, where temperatures are mechanically controlled. Everyday risks are minimized by the use of well-maintained, safe equipment and by following proper office safety procedures. Field work involves working in isolated areas, sometimes alone. High altitudes, adverse weather conditions, temperature extremes typical of a high desert, and rugged terrain make field work difficult at times. There are risks associated with work on rivers, especially in swift water situations, and in the use of tools and vehicles.
