Why we love this job 1) You get to work outside 2) Take pride in upkeep for the people of Casper to enjoy 3) Great benefits, retirement, and paid time off Incumbents are responsible for a variety of semi-skilled labor and custodial tasks related to an assigned area within the Parks and/or Recreation Divisions. REPORTING STRUCTURE: Receives direction from higher-level supervisory and management staff. Typical Class Essential Duties 1. Manual labor tasks per assigned workgroups which may include: hand shoveling dirt and/or snow, snow blowing, snowmaking (if assigned to Hogadon Ski Area), grounds maintenance, aeration, watering, sweeping, weeding, mowing, ladder climbing, cleaning, litter pick-up, trash collection, and object lifting and loading/unloading. 2. Operates a variety of light equipment and tools including mowers, lawn tractors, snowmaking and grooming equipment, hand tools, auto-scrubbers, high-pressure pressure washers, and other related tools, equipment, and vehicles as needed. 3. Installs, maintains, and repairs landscape infrastructure such as playgrounds, planters, shelters, benches, signs, bollards, and concrete pads. 4. Performs light cleaning, litter pickup and/or housekeeping activities. 5. Applies various fertilizers, soil amendments, herbicides, pesticides, and/or other chemicals used in parks/turf maintenance. 6. May perform minor irrigation repairs such as the replacement of sprinkler heads. 7. May monitor and maintain supplies inventory and related records. 8. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules, and general information at the facility or event within the Parks and Recreation Division. 9. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. 10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Knowledge (position requirements at entry): Knowledge of: • Customer service principles. • Standard safety practices and procedures. • Maintenance and manual tasks. • Proper use of basic tools and equipment. • Basic mathematics. • Cleaning techniques. Abilities (position requirements at entry): Ability to: • Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values. • Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately respond to/investigate observations or employee reports of accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions. • Work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed. • Safely operate, maintain, and repair a variety of equipment and hand tools. • Perform a variety of manual tasks for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions. • Learn how to safely work in holes, dig trenches, and climb ladders. • Learn how to safely work around pesticides and chemicals in different environmental settings. • Care for applicable tools and equipment. • Clean-up work sites in a neat and orderly fashion. • Maintain a neat and professional appearance. • Be flexible with changing assignments. • Communicate effectively verbally. • Follow written and verbal instructions and directions. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Training, Experience & Certifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) preferred. • Must be at least 18 years of age. • Minimum of six (6) months of grounds maintenance or custodial experience preferred. LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Wyoming driver’s license preferred. • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Class B CDL license preferred. • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Wyoming Pesticide Applicator’s License, within one (1) year of hire is preferred. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must utilize direct deposit for payroll purposes. Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence. Physical and Environmental Conditions: City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include: + Emergency response/rescue + Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste + Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems + Writing or modifying code, maintaining or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems + CDL operations and driving + Operating power-driven machinery or equipment + Creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments + Working with or directing minors Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Incumbents may drive, operate equipment, or work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures. Frequent work on or around moving motorized equipment and at heights is also expected. Employees in this class are often subjected to unsanitary environments, liquid and solid waste, fumes/dusts, odors, chemicals, and excessive noise. May be subject to repetitive motion and vibration when operating tools and machinery. Work requires the use of personal protective equipment including hard hats, eye protection, hearing protectors, gloves, fall protection, safety vests, and safety shoes.
