Part-Time Faculty | BFA Communication Design

The BFA Communication Design (https://www.newschool.edu/parsons/bfa-communication-design/) program in the School of Art, Media and Technology (https://www.newschool.edu/parsons/art-media-technology-school/) in Parsons School of Design is seeking Part-Time Faculty to teach across their interaction and typography infused courses. Academically rigorous, the Communication Design BFA is the oldest undergraduate program of its kind in the United States. In this program students learn the theory and craft needed to combine words, images, and ideas to visually transmit information and project human experiences in print, on screen, or in space. We are looking for faculty that can teach across a broad range of sub-disciplines including (but not limited to): typography, interaction, branding, editorial design, digital products, type design, motion graphics, and spatial graphics. Part-time faculty at The New School bargain collectively through Academics Come Together, ACT - UAW , Local 7902. Part-Time Faculty are responsible for: developing course content and syllabi in consultation with Program Leadership; attending all classes they are assigned to teach as scheduled by the University; reporting any emergency faculty absences to the PTF Associate Director and Program Leadership; recording student attendance in a timely manner within two days of each class session; and adhering to all University policies (ie., FERPA , exclusive use of New School email, etc.), as outlined in the ACT - UAW Local 7902 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Studio Hourly Rate: $120/contact hr Seminar Hourly Rate: $146/contact hr Work Mode: On-Campus Minimum Qualifications: + A MFA in Graphic Design is preferred or equivalent industry experience + U.S. Work Authorization (i.e., U.S. Passport or EAD card) + Ability to adhere to University COVID -19 Policy and requirements. Preferred Qualifications: + A masters degree in graphic design, communication design, or closely related field OR equivalent, current, and relevant professional experience that demonstrates deep critical engagement with communication design and an advancement of knowledge within the discipline. + Experience using a variety of pedagogic methods to contextualize projects, exercises, and tools, within traditions of communication design and typography across diverse media, including screen based, interactive media. + communication design culture as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared design work, artist talks, public lectures, panel/conference participation or critical writing. + Expertise in the applications, techniques, and methods of graphic design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite) as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared research, scholarship, or creative practice. + For specific classes: + Typography and Form-making courses: Proficient in contemporary type discourse across media and proficient in the use of stylesheets for type on screen-based media as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared research, scholarship, or creative practice. + For Interaction (Web Design) and Digital Products: Proficiency in computational methods and techniques (e.g. JavaScript, HTML , and CSS ) plus an understanding of internet data resources, interfaces (e.g. Application Programming Interfaces), and discourse as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared research, scholarship, or creative practice OR extensive experience with the methods and processes for large-scale digital product design and development (e.g. user research, collaborative ideation, contemporary prototyping, agile development). + For Motion: Proficiency in the use of contemporary motion graphics software (e.g. AfterEffects and Maxon Cinema 4D) and motion graphics discourse through the specific lens of communication design as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared research, scholarship, or creative practice. + For Type design: Proficiency in the use of contemporary type design discourse, software, (e.g. Glyphs, Robofont, Python), methods, and techniques as demonstrated through a body of publicly shared research, scholarship, or creative practice.
