Overtime Eligible Exempt FLSA Status Learned Professional Campus Location Bend Primary Purpose The Part-time Instructor provides instruction in Dental Assisting, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom. The individual holding this position will provide instruction in the Dental Assisting in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) requirements. Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities Provide instruction in Dental Assisting courses in classroom, remote, or online delivery mode using established course outcomes. This includes providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on any of the four campuses COCC serves, by interactive video chat technology. Provide instruction, guidance and assessment in the lab and clinic settings within the Dental Assisting Program. This may include didactic instruction in the classroom depending on education and experience. Courses that may be taught include, but are not limited to, Infection Control, Basic and Advanced Dental Assisting, Dental Materials, Preventive Dentistry and Dental Radiology. Part-time instruction requires approximately 25 contact hours per month. This a cohort program with up to 24 students enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program beginning each Fall Term. Assist and direct students in the onsite Dental Clinic. In partnership with Deschutes County Health Services, COCC offers an on-site Dental Clinic. This clinic is held in the COCC Dental Lab/Clinic and is offered 6-10 Fridays per term. Responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining supplies, instruments and equipment; scheduling patients and volunteer dentists; supervising student dental assistants; partnering with the volunteer dentist and dental assisting faculty to provide quality care to the patients. Provide one hour of office time per week per course to guide and evaluate student progress. Utilize resources, including technological resources such as Blackboard, to provide current course content and to record grades. Conduct classroom presentations and activities; incorporate new methodologies in teaching and technology into classes. Cooperate with the Allied Health Department efforts to revise and standardize curricula for these classes. Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College. Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned. Department Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies. Thorough knowledge of field of General Dental Assisting based on education and/or experience in the field. Visual ability, corrected, to enable Dental Assisting instructors to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory situations. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics. Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers, video chat technology (e.g. Zoom) and familiarity with or willingness to learn the learning management system (LMS) used at COCC. Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature. Ability to work with other faculty and COCC staff at all levels. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience. Ergonomic Requirements Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. The employee is required to meet physical and ergonomic requirements of the program area as this may vary from positions. Minimum Requirements Graduate of an accredited Dental Assisting Program. 3-5 years of general dental assisting experience.

Necessary Special Requirements: Current CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) certification from DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) Current Oregon Board of Dentistry Radiology Certification Current Oregon Board of Dentistry EFDA (Expanded Functions Dental Assistant) certification. Certifications: Current CPR certification. Current Immunizations as required by the Dental Assisting Program.
