NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Business Structures of the Music Industry, a course sponsored by Steinhardt's Music Business Program at New York University. Teaching commences in the autumn term (Sept-Dec 2025)
Course Description:
The broad objective of this course is to understand the commercial and copyright basis for the music industry, and the importance of entrepreneurial thinking and opportunity recognition in the music industry. The course will provide a background study of all related areas of the multibillion-dollar music industry, including the evolution and operations of the record company, music publishing, artist management, live entertainment, copyright, business-to-business and consumer-facing digital services.
Upon completion of this course, students will:
+ Understand the structures of major companies in the music industry, the origins of those structures, and the ways in which the structures change as a result of new competitive pressures and new technology.
+ Understand the power of personal creativity and innovative thinking about problems in the music industry, and in life.
+ Explore industries that could offer growth opportunities for the music industry.
+ Understand the basics of U.S. and international copyright law and trade agreements.
+ Understand the concepts that affect the public's perception of artistic work, non-artistic products, and purchasing
decisions.
+ Learn how music publishers earn money, how songwriters work with publishers and rights organizations, and what constitutes financial security for songwriters and artists.
Expectation of Hours:
This is a 2-credit class, which calls for total contact hours equaling about 17.5 hours. The semester is 15 weeks (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and there are 2.5 hours of classroom instruction each week. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute “office hour” at NYU London per week, during which time they will be available to meet with students.
Teaching information:
Instructors are encouraged to use a variety of pedagogical techniques. This typically includes a combination of lecture- and discussion-based class sessions, as well as the use of student activities, such as debate exercises, flipped classroom environments, and experimental simulations.
In addition to exams, instructors may use a variety of assignments to assess student comprehension of the course material. These may include online weekly homework, writing assignments, short student presentations, and in-class multiple-choice quizzes. Instructors may select the mix that is more appropriate to their teaching methodology.
Instructors should be prepared to teach in-person and simultaneously to be prepared for remote instruction should circumstances require it. NYU uses Zoom as its primary platform for remote instruction.
