About MakerLab
The MakerLAB at Cornell Tech is a highly visible, and recently renovated prototyping facility and makerspace. Following its recent expansion to a new 2700 sq ft facility; the lab has doubled its equipment and operational capacity.
Position Summary

We are seeking a MakerLAB Woodshop Specialist with expertise in a variety of specialized equipment and tools, as well as a commitment to ensuring safety and technical support for students and research staff. This position requires proficiency in specific equipment, including Wazer Waterjet, Shopbot CNC, and Bantam CNC Mill, along with a strong understanding of woodworking and safe shop operations.
The Specialist will provide critical support for student projects, coordinate with research teams to meet project timelines and material needs, and assist in creating prototypes and samples for educational and research purposes. This role also involves training and guiding users on proper equipment usage, machine protocols, and safety standards.
This role requires someone who is proactive, highly organized, and able to work well in a collaborative and dynamic environment. The MakerLAB Woodshop Specialist will be integral to ensuring that students and research staff have the resources, guidance, and support they need to succeed in their projects.

The weekly schedule is 2- hours per week, fully onsite at the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. This position is expected to occasionally lift/carry up to 25–50lbs (e.g., raw materials, tooling, machine parts) and push/pull up to 50lbs (e.g., loading stock, adjusting fixtures, moving carts with materials).

Essential Functions Include
Equipment & Operations Support and Training- 35%
Provide specialized support and technical guidance on the operation of MakerLAB equipment such as the Wazer Waterjet, Shopbot CNC, and Bantam CNC Mill.Ensure safe and effective use of all equipment by students and research staff, providing expert consultation as needed.Instruct users in the proper protocols, safety procedures, and operational standards for a variety of woodshop equipment.Assist with developing and implementing training materials for new users to ensure thorough and consistent instruction.Student Consultations & Project Guidance- 20%
Hold regular office hours for 1:1 student consultations regarding fabrication, design, and equipment use for their MakerLAB-related projects.Offer troubleshooting and guidance on project development, ensuring students have the necessary resources and skills to meet their goals.Work closely with research staff and students to provide technical guidance and ensure alignment with project requirements and timelines.Collaborate to determine project material needs, assist in sourcing, and ensure timely acquisition of materials.Help produce prototypes and samples that support specialized teaching and research initiatives.Maintenance, Repairs, & Equipment/Inventory Coordination- 20%
Schedule and perform routine maintenance for all equipment in the MakerLAB woodshop.Maintain detailed records of equipment repairs, maintenance, and procurement.Identify and report on any needed modifications or upgrades to equipment or lab spaces to improve functionality.Responsible for the inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.With guidance from MakerLAB Design and Technology Lead, evaluate vendors, supplies, and equipment, ensuring quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely availability.Woodshop Safety & Operations- 15%
Provide safety orientations and ongoing training for students on safe operation of woodshop tools and equipment.Conduct routine safety checks and audits to ensure all safety protocols are being followed.Documentation & Reporting- 5%
Conduct test procedures and experiments as needed, documenting data and assisting in the preparation of reports for research and project assessments.Other position-related responsibilities- 5%
Participate in projects or other duties as assigned with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification. Completion of any university required compliance trainings.Required Qualifications
