JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for an undergrad student researcher to join our Fluids Machinery Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The Department is part of the Fluid Dynamics Division within the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, which has a long, successful history of providing innovative solutions and technology for a range of U.S. Government and Industry sponsors. In this position, you will support the design, testing, and analysis of marine vehicle propulsion, hydrodynamic vehicle control systems, and related applications such as turbomachinery, renewable energy production, and rotorcraft aerodynamics. Propulsion systems rely on an understanding of turbomachinery flow physics. Hydrodynamic vehicle control systems rely on an understanding of fluid generated forces (lift and drag) from various parts of a vehicle and how they interact. Experimental fluids testing involves observation and measurement of forces and flow interacting with a test article.
Responsibilities include:
+ Assist with writing and debugging computer code to analyze turbomachinery and hydrodynamic designs
+ Assist in the development of optimization methods for constrained multi-dimensional fluid/structure design problems
+ Assist with developing and evaluating novel technology concepts
+ Interact collaboratively with other engineers, researchers, and academic faculty
+ Contribute to the design, assembly, and operation of complex test articles and experiments at ARL water tunnel facilities, government test facilities, and field sites
Undergraduate research assistant pay will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimum requirements include at least one year of coursework towards a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
Required skills/experience areas include:
+ Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or related STEM discipline
+ Familiarity with MATLAB, basic proficiency preferred
+ Success in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented environment where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective
+ Ability to work independently on technical problems that are ill-defined and may require seeking out resources or learning needed to solve the challenges
+ Ability to present in front of professionals, conveying information of varying degrees of complexity to an audience with differing technical backgrounds in order to drive actions or decisions as part of a team
+ US citizenship required
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
+ Exposure to compiled computer languages (FORTRAN, C, etc…)
+ Familiarity with solid modelling/CAD systems
+ Interest in computer science and applied math related topics such as: machine learning, numerical methods, and optimization
+ Experience with hands-on experimentation and testing, including use of basic hand tools
+ Interest in applied research or future graduate school
+ Ability to obtain a US Government security clearance
Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.
