Your Role at Baxter:
Manages Baxter’s portfolio of new ideas, patents, and pending patent applications by ensuring ideas are collected, evaluated, and provided to, and timely filed by, practitioners. Includes identifying portfolio decisions needed and collaborating with subject matter experts to make decisions. Collaborates with intellectual property attorneys on a variety of intellectual property matters.
What You'll be Doing:
Acquire initial and subsequent disclosures from inventors, acquire or develop patent drawings and prepare patent applications, develop responses to Office Actions, and conduct all other necessary patent preparation and prosecution tasks for assigned U.S. and foreign patent matters
Participate in R&D-sponsored brainstorming activity and forward-looking patenting workshops or similar activity intended to develop patentable subject matter directed to a specific field
Collaborate with intellectual property attorneys, patent agents, and subject matter experts to identify ideas to protect, where in the world to protect them, and to attend to prosecution decisions and maintenance fee / annuity decisions
Communicate the status of patent matters to inventors, peers, and management
Monitor new competitor patents, stay abreast of competitor patent portfolios, and communicate relevant patents to Baxter’s R&D and marketing staff. Collaborate with attorneys to conduct preliminary evaluation of infringement risks from new competitor patents.
Maintain current knowledge of work performed by R&D groups at Baxter as well as of significant historical product design and other technical information
Keep current on patent office administrative rules, including PCT rules, and adapt practices to comply
Independently manage and prioritize a full workload for IP team members and outside counsel with minimal supervision or direction
Maintain current knowledge of developing issues in the intellectual property field and provide education and advice to Baxter management and employees
What You'll Bring:
Bachelors' degree in Science or Engineering or the equivalent
Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
2 plus years of experience preparing patent applications and preparing responses to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Experience in Medical Device industry is preferred but not required
Engineering experience is preferred but not required
Requires thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and proficiency with patent search and analytics software, hosted docketing or idea submissions systems, such as ANAQUA, and strong understanding of other electronic tools
Organized and strong attention to detail with a dedication to accuracy and thoroughness; willingness to adapt to a fast-paced environment
Communication skills (written and verbal) to effectively communicate with IP team, inventors, and outside counsel

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $112,000 to $140,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses and long-term incentive.
