Pathologist's Assistant Supervisor - LV - Knoxville, TN - Monday - Friday - 8:00AM-5:00PM

Pay Range: $84,250+ per year

I.     Perform and assist in human post-mortem examination including but not limited to:
       a. Review autopsy permit for legal adequacy.  If incorrect, advise Pathologist in charge of the      case and assist as required to initiate procedures to obtain proper authorization.
       b. If requested, retrieve and review of patient chart(s) and clinical information with Pathologist if required, summarize clinical history.
       c. Schedule and arrange date and time of autopsy with local mortuary establishments and advise Pathologist of such arrangements.
       d. Confer with the Pathologist to identify any special technique or procedure which will be necessary, i.e., Immunofluorescence, toxicological studies, cultures, smears, Virchow or Rokitansky, possible potentially ineffective or contagious, etc.
       e.  Under the direction of the Pathologist, perform and assist in the autopsy including external examination, in-situ organ examination, evisceration, dissection, and recording of findings such as organ weight, presence of body fluids, gross anatomical findings, etc.
        f.  Procurements of biological specimens for analysis as required (i.e., blood/tissue cultures, viral cultures, toxicological material, etc.), and perform specialized procedures as directed by the Pathologist.
        g. Upon request, select and submit tissue section for microscopic examination.
        h.   Upon request, photograph the body, organs, and other pertinent items as required.
         i.   Assure the proper restoration of the body for acceptable release to mortuary personnel as per accepted local mortuary protocol.  Notify morticians of any biohazards which may be present such as contagious disease, radioactive implants, etc.
         j.  In a manner acceptable to the mortuary establishment, clean autopsy area prior to leaving autopsy site.
        k. As required, transport collected tissue specimens or biological samples collected to Quest Diagnostics or hospital facility.
         l. Assure proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies and cleanliness of instruments.
       m. Available for on-call autopsy rotation.
        n. Assist in teaching of Pathologist’s Assistant Trainee in accepted methods and procedures of anatomic pathology.

II. Perform and assist in human surgical pathology examination including but not limited to:
       a. Assure correct data entry and numbering of specimens.
       b. Dictate gross description and perform dissection of surgical specimens of which the majority are complex cases, i.e., not biopsies.
       c. Using independent judgment to ascertain normal vs. abnormal tissue, select and submit tissue sections for microscopic examination including preparation of frozen and permanent sections for light and immunofluorescent microscopy.
       d. Select and submit tissue for special studies as required (i.e., ERA/PRA, culture, chromosome analysis, immunofluorescence, etc.).
       e. Assist Pathologist with frozen section or special procedures as requested or required.
       f. Photography of surgical and pertinent specimens as required.
      g. Responsible for assuring the proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies and cleanliness of the surgical pathology area.
       h. Rotate between Quest Diagnostics and other hospital pathology laboratories as required in the capacity of a Pathologist’s Assistant.
        i. Assist in collection of specimens for anatomic pathology conferences.
        j. Assist in teaching of Pathologists’ Assistant Trainee, Surgical Pathology Laboratory Assistant, and Histology personnel in accepted methods and procedures.

Supervision Exercised:
I.    Oversees staff and activities of the department, distributes/assigns work; determines priorities;   schedules non-routine procedures; performs personnel related functions (hiring, firing, discipline, training, etc.).
II.   Performs advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques.  May duplicate work of others to confirm test results.  Re-evaluates methodology, makes recommended changes and assists in test interpretation.  Determines if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated.
III. Checks/approves all specialized and problem reports for accuracy.
IV. Initiates quality-control measures and monitors quality of work for adherence to laboratory standards.
V.   Performs duties of pathologist’ assistant as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
VI. Completes special projects as requested, e.g., surveys, statistical reports, studies, research, etc.

Supervision Received:
I.   Manager:  Manager of Surgical Pathology.


Responsibilities and Authorities:
I.   Interact effectively with hospital and affiliated external agency personnel, peers, patients, clients, visitors, and supervisory personnel in a productive and professional manner.
II.   Understand and adhere to company policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
III. Guarantee the confidentiality of patient data and identity at all times.
IV. Assist, initiate or implement other special procedures or duties as requested, required or directed by the Supervising Pathologists’ Assistant and/or Pathologist.


Non-Physical Qualifications:
I.  Minimum of B.S. Degree with emphasis in health-related area and three years of on-the-job training and work experience or graduated of an ASPC Accredited School with B.S. or M.S. Degree.

The physical qualifications listed below are general requirements for this position.  The actual
exertion level (and frequency of use) can and does fluctuate depending on the individual tasks being performed.

Physical Qualifications:
I.  Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. of reagents.

Primary Duties:
I.  Cutting surgical specimens, which include gross description of each specimen and using independent judgment to choose appropriate representative tissue samples.
II. Perform autopsies as assigned.

Other Duties:
I.  Additional related duties as assigned.

I. Education Preferred:
Successful completion of a training program approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists; or must possess a baccalaureate degree with a major or minor in a biological science or an allied health field; and have at least three years of combined experience in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology.


II. Work Experience: 
3 years combined experience in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology if not certified by an ASPC program.


III. Other:
Must be nationally certified by or be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP) examination.  Must be eligible for a Nevada state license.
