SUMMARY:
Transfusion Medicine physicians provide very diverse services for LVHN/client patients and 
donors. To act as a leader in Transfusion Medicine, and as a consultant to other physicians, the 
individual should have detailed knowledge of relevant concepts in immunohematology, 
transfusion of blood components (including their intended effects and potential complications), 
and physiology of blood component transfusion. They should demonstrate expertise in the 
application of current modalities of transfusion medicine services as well as familiarity with the 
logistical, financial, and personnel issues involved in the management of the Transfusion Medicine 
service. The individual will be tasked with providing oversight and direction for training and 
education programs, and will retain ultimate responsibility for those duties delegated to other 
qualified medical professionals. In addition, they should have expertise in collecting, developing, 
and manufacturing of mononuclear cells as both HCT/Ps and biologicals/drugs. The position also 
requires a working knowledge of the applicable PA DOH, FDA, CLIA, FACT, CAP, and AABB 
regulatory/accrediting requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be 
assigned. 
1. Oversees the conduct of staff responsible for:
a. Collects, processes, tests, and distributes human cellular therapy products for 
transplantation or treatment.
b. Provides laboratory testing services, including clinical diagnostic testing, testing 
required for organ and tissue transplantation, blood and tissue donor testing.
c. Oversees of apheresis procedures, including mononuclear cell collections.
d. Oversees of aseptic processing of cellular therapy products.
2. Provides consultative, educational, and support services that relate to Transfusion 
Medicine products and services

. Collaborates in the provision of Cellular Therapy services and quality functions at LVHN. 
Ensure compliance with cGTP and cGMP requirements, as applicable.
4. Makes judgments about the medical significance of product manufacturing events and 
communicating effectively in interpreting data and related correlations to referring 
physicians as appropriate, including but not limited to:
a. Controls and provides disposition of non-conforming products.
b. Evaluations and takes care of any complications resulting from donor procedures.
c. Evaluations and takes care of any complications resulting from transfusion or 
infusion of products.
d. Evaluates hematopoietic progenitor cell donors with regard to eligibility to donate.
5. Makes judgments about the medical significance of clinical laboratory data and 
communicating the interpretation of laboratory data to referring physicians, as 
appropriate.
6. Exercises control in all matters related to compliance with regulatory and accreditation 
requirements impacting the services provided.
7. Ensures quality monitoring programs evaluate the adequacy of services, effectiveness of 
procedures, and safety of products.
8. Ensures that quality system requirements are effectively established and effectively 
maintained in accordance with internal requirements and regulatory/accreditation 
requirements.
9. Establishes and monitors transfusion practices including informed consent, criteria for 
transfusion, transfusion ordering policies, appropriate use of blood products, and blood 
administration policies.
10. Ensures the maintenance and adequacy of the blood supply and work with blood suppliers 
and other suppliers of critical services and supplies to ensure efficient hospital operations.
11. Provides expert leadership of HNL Lab Medicine ACL sites at LVHN hospitals as a CLIA 
Laboratory Director.
12. Ensures adequate medical/director coverage in the absence of the director.
13. Meets institutional, licensure and maintains CME requirements in order to remain current 
in Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Pathology

14. Engages in educational and research activities to stay abreast of developments in the 
practice of pathology.
15. Participates in quality improvement programs with the goals of enhancing patient safety, 
ensuring timely delivery of reports, and monitoring physician competence. Continually 
meets all proficiency standards of QI programs.
16. Maintains adequate malpractice insurance and tail coverage.


QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

Education/Experience:
M.D. or D.O. degree with successful licensure through the completion of the United States 
Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or its equivalency. A minimum of 2-5 years 
relevant scientific experience in the application of scientific principles, concepts, and 
techniques in the designated discipline, preferably in an accredited laboratory. It will be 
expected that if not currently Board certified the individual will be Board eligible and seek 
appropriate Board Certification(s) in Clinical Pathology (CP) or Anatomic Pathology and 
Clinical Pathology (AP/CP), as well as Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking. Working 
knowledge of State and Federal regulations governing laboratories.
