Pathologists' Assistant

**Job Description:**
To perform initial handling, dissection and gross examination of tissue submitted for pathologic examination.
1. Verifies the name, surgical pathology number, type and number of specimens received in each case to correspond to information given on the requisition form and cassettes. Informs the accessioning staff, and/or the lab supervisor of any discrepancies.
2. Dictates a gross description and performs the necessary dissection of the specimens received. A gross description includes the color, consistency, weight and measurements as well as a description of pertinent details along any abnormalities or unusual findings. The dissection involves the proper cutting of specimens and appropriate submission of tissue for microscopic examination with regard to disease process and clinical history.
3. Consults with attending pathologist about complex, unusual or difficult specimens.
4. Performs special techniques, including but not limited to: touch preps, taking tissue for cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and electron microscopy.
5. Decalcifies bone specimens prior to processing.
6. Performs frozen sections.
7. Takes photographs of gross specimen.
8. Reviews and corrects gross descriptions of the specimens.
9. Places the tissues in the processors at the end of the day; organizes and distributes requisitions and other paperwork to the appropriate locations.
**Salary Range:**
$101,000.00 - $134,000.00 annually

Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._

**Job Requirements:**
+ Education: Degree from an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program registered by the NYS, substantial equivalent of such a program as determined by NYS, or a degree in a NAACLS accredited pathologists’ assistant program.
+ Experience: two years preferred
+ License Required: NYS license for Pathologists’ Assistant or Limited Permit per regulatory requirements.
+ Skills: Basic understanding of laboratory information systems and good communication skills
