**Responsibilities:**
Assists pathologists and pathology residents in the gross examination of surgical specimens and autopsies at Strong Memorial Hospital. Also provides grossing coverage at Highland Hospital, FF Thompson Hospital and other affiliates on a rotational basis, as needed.
Provides coverage to the Postmortem Medicine Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital in the performance of autopsies.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:
+ Reports to the Director of Surgical Pathology SMH, through the Gross Room supervisor and the Surgical Pathology Chief Supervisor.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:
+ May train and supervise the activities of technicians and students who support the Gross Room.
ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Trains pathology residents in the gross description and dissection of surgical specimens.
+ Verifies the name, surgical pathology number, type and number of specimens received in each case to correspond to information given on the requisition form and cassettes. Informs the pathology resident the accessioning staff, and/or the lab supervisor of any discrepancies.
+ Dictates a gross description and performs the necessary dissection of the specimens received. A gross description Includes the color, consistency, weight and measurements as well as a description of pertinent details along any abnormalities or unusual findings. The dissection involves the proper cutting of specimens and appropriate submission of tissue for microscopic examination with regard to disease process and clinical history.
+ Consults with attending pathologist about complex, unusual or difficult specimens.
+ Consults with the resident responsible for signing out large specimens and notifies him/her of unusual or unexpected findings.
+ Performs special techniques, including but not limited to: touch preps, taking tissue for cytogenetics, flow cytometry, gene rearrangement, electron microscopy and STAT freezing.
+ Decalcifies bone specimens prior to processing.
+ Arranges/coordinates with radiology to have specimens and paraffin blocks x-rayed.
+ Performs frozen sections.
+ Maintains a log of tissue requests for research and clinical trials and obtains, or assists the resident in obtaining, the appropriate tissue without compromising the diagnosis and evaluation of the specimen.
+ Assists and trains residents in the photography of gross specimens. Photographs documents for conferences.
+ Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
+ A degree from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program;
+ AAPA certified or eligible with prior experience as a pathologists' assistant is required.
+ The ASCP fellowship examination in Pathologists' Assistant must be successfully completed with a passing score within one year of employment
