Patient Access Specialist

Summary: Efficiently and courteously obtains information to register patients in the clinical management system to assure accurate and complete demographic and payor information. Performs associated clerical duties including obtaining signatures for patient consent, verifying insurance information, generation of point of service bills. Explores every avenue available in collecting account at time of service. Implements a mutually satisfactory method of payment until account is paid in full. Communicates with Patient Access, Resource Management, and the Medicaid eligibility vendor. Responsibilities: Patients and their families are served compassionately when gathering necessary demographic information in completion of the registration process. Directly communicates with patient and/or family regarding financial liability. Assists patients/families by directing, escorting them or providing maps to other areas of the hospital as necessary to assure we provide an excellent patient experience. Responsible for managing the gaps in expectations and acknowledging inconveniences. Physicians depend upon copies of admission and outpatient reports for patient follow-ups. Clinical and Diagnostic Services depend upon a speedy and proficient registration to expedite patient care and maintain schedule to assure customer satisfaction. Assists with visitor control in the registration area. The Patient Accounting Department depends upon accurate registration information to expedite the billing process. Health Information Services relies on registration for accurate registration information for coding services. LENOIR **Other Information** Other information: EDUCATION High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate Degree in Business, Medical Office Administration or related field preferred. EXPERIENCE Two or three years of customer service, collections, registration, or medical office experience required. Candidates with an Associate degree qualify with one to two years of experience. LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION None required. OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Excellent customer service skills. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to utilize computers, electronic calculator and other office equipment. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software necessary, preferably Microsoft Word and Excel. Able to deal with the public (face to face and over the phone). Excellent interdepartmental communication skills required. WORK ENVIRONMENT Extensive patient/family contact. Exposed to moderate temperatures and controlled lighting. Subject to many interruptions due to multiple calls and inquiries. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Walking, lifting, carrying, standing.
