The Patient Advocate serves as a liaison between the patient and their health care professional, nurse navigator or social worker and facilitates communication between the patient and the department involved. Will be able to demonstrate empathy for the patient’s concerns and fears and offer support for the patient’s medical journey.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The patient advocate will familiarize the patient with The Kirkland Cancer Center – will provide a tour of the facilities to the patient and family and introduce patient and family to members of the Kirkland Cancer Center team.The patient advocate will serve as a “concierge” of the Kirkland Cancer Center in order to streamline the patient’s visit and provide excellent customer serviceWill connect the patient and family to community and social support services if needed. Will provide training and supervision for the patient relations volunteers. Process includes office orientation to patient relations protocols and processes.May help with practical concerns regarding scheduling of physician visits, tests and arranging transportation.Will help patient and family with financial concerns by referring them to the proper department – will walk them to the correct department in order to streamline the process.Will visit with the patient and family following their appointments with the physician, patient navigator, financial counselor or social worker to determine if patient and family have additional concerns. Will report additional concerns to related department.Manages and maintains a database that is vital to the Cancer Center, such as the complaint/grievance process. Develops and maintains databases for patient satisfaction projects as requested by Administrative Director.Will provide emotional support and reassurance for patients and families.When appropriate and requested by patients, the lay advocate may accompany patients to their medical appointments and/or procedures.Performs related responsibilities as required or directedMaintains oversight of educational materials, brochures – ensures ample volumes of supplies and materials by re-ordering as needed.JOB SPECIICATIONS:

High school diploma required. College degree preferredLICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
N/AEXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years experience in patient relations, communications, patient satisfaction or Public relations in a healthcare setting is preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to supervise volunteer staff.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of hospital personnel.Excellent interpersonal relations skills.Conflict management and problem-solving skills.Demonstrated ability to develop and provide educational presentations before public groups.Ability to attend meetings where and when necessary.A working knowledge of computers (building data bases, word processing, spreadsheets, graphic presentations).
