The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for management of campus peace officers and community service officers associated with patrol operations, and administrative functions such as schedules, approval of officers' reports and other legal documentation and performance appraisals. The position effectively leads, coaches, mentors, teaches and provides guidance to employees that work in a stressful environment associated with the 24/7 year-round law enforcement patrol operations. Patrol Sergeants manage patrol field operations, respond in a supervisory capacity to police and service calls and act as both supervisors and first responders for the wide variety of emergency calls for service received through the DPS Emergency Communications Center or the Onondaga County 911 Center. Patrol Sergeants engage in and lead proactive community policing efforts, supervise and initiate investigations into incidents and enforcement NYS laws and SU rules and regulations. The position provides first line lead supervision and management under a chain of command at crime scenes and/or unusual occurrences and works to ensure effective initial investigations and outcomes.
