Payroll Accountant

Job Summary

The Payroll Accountant is responsible for analyzing payroll information and performing a variety of payroll accounting duties associated with the timely and accurate preparation and processing of payroll.

Essential Functions

Review payment submission for completeness and accuracy. Calculate salary differentials. Perform pre and post processing payroll reconciliations and auditing. Assist with the departmental inbox and the incidents in the ticketing queues and responding to employee inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Determine appropriate payroll action required based on departmental submissions. Coordinate with HRIS and the University community to ensure timely receipt of required payroll input.  Review and verify all pay-related personnel/job changes for accuracy. Work with other departments to resolve issues in a timely and correct manner. Review daily audits for correctness.  Setup and maintain Federal, state, and local tax withholding, direct deposit accounts, and ongoing and one-time payroll. Work with the community to identify and resolve incorrect payments including invalid direct deposits; missing paychecks; and any other discrepancies.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.  Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information. Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant professional experience Working knowledge of wages and hour regulations as well as federal, state and local payroll tax withholdings Proficiency using payroll software Ability to remain highly organized in a complex environment while adhering to strict deadlines Possess good verbal, written and interpersonal skills Intermediate Excel, Word and Outlook skills Excellent customer service and problem resolutions skills Proficiency using payroll software Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments and complete tasks in a timely manner

Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)

This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $ 47,490.00 to $ 71,230.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
