Payroll Manager
Location: Washington, DC Schedule: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM FLSA: Exempt Position Type: Full-Time/Regular Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Payroll Manager in the Human Resources department, reporting to the Senior Payroll Manager. The role will reside in the Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and will support the Senior Payroll Manager overseeing all aspects of payroll processing. Responsible for assisting with the data entry, preparation, processing, validation and reconciliation of payrolls for the firm’s U.S. offices. The Payroll Manager is expected to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the firm’s attorneys, advisors and staff, and maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement. Key responsibilities of this position include : + Oversee and process entire payroll process including bi-weekly, semi-monthly and monthly payrolls ensuring all deadlines are met. + Enter payroll and HR data into the firm’s Workday HRIS system, including various HR, Recruiting and tax-related transactions. + Verify and validate timecard calculations for overtime processing on payroll. + Analyze payroll data for accuracy and tax compliance. + Submit, validate and reconcile periodic, quarterly and annual tax submission to third-party vendor for tax filing. + Process on\off cycle payments and various adjustments. + Coordinate international wire transfer payment requests with outside vendor. + Collaborate with HR and Finance departments to ensure payroll transactions are accurately reflected in financial records. + Stay updated with federal, state and local payroll tax laws and regulations to ensure accurate tax withholding and reporting. + Assist in implementing and maintaining payroll systems and software. + Assist employees and partners with payroll-related questions in a professional and timely manner. + Generate accurate payroll reports as requested from various internal departments. + Assist Finance and Tax departments with analysis of general ledger. + Process Accounts Payable check requests for payroll-related items such as garnishments and vendor invoices. + Create and coordinate all payroll items processed through Accounts Payable (e.g., non-employee stipends and other payments) for later entry into the Workday HRIS system. + Answer questions and assist personnel with tax and other payment modeling and estimates through the Workday HRIS system. + Prepare administrative analyses and reports and related functions. + Assist with other HR departmental responsibilities as requested. Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities): + College degree, with specialization in accounting or finance, required + Previous experience with automated payroll/HRIS systems, including Workday, preferred + Proven experience in payroll processing and compliance management + Proven experience as a Payroll Manger, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. + In-depth knowledge of payroll processes, procedures and regulations. + Experience with Workday Payroll, Time Tracking and Absence. + Experience with periodic, quarterly and annual payroll tax filing and reconciliation. + Ability to analyze complex payroll data to identify and resolve potential problems. + Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks; strong attention to detail. + Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel + Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment + Strong service orientation and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, office and firm management, and outside business partners + Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Outlook + Excellent oral and written communication skills + Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions + Ability to use critique of work to improve performance + Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of all information, and adhering to the Firm’s Core Values + Commitment to professional growth and development The anticipated base salary range for this position in Washington, DC is $120,000 to $160,000. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, years of relevant experience, certifications or other professional licenses held, job-related knowledge and skills, business needs, and the location from which the work will be performed. Additionally, salary or hourly wages may be only part of the total compensation package, which may also include a full range of health and other insurance benefits, financial and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility), a discretionary bonus, and various paid time off benefits.
