The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) - Office of the Controlleris currently seeking aPayroll Processing Associate.
Under general supervision, the Associate performs payroll and financial accounting system transactions, on line data processing, and coordination of activities within the institution or with several USM institutions' Payroll/Personnel Offices, System Computer Facility and Central Payroll Bureau.

PRIMARY DUTIES
Processes UMB's biweekly payroll adjustment entries and enters reason codes. Runs queries to analyze data. Follows up on problems identified in exception queries. Runs retroactive pay process and contact campus schools and units to validate calculations for large amounts.Enters offsetting entries for each negative retro pay on employee’s payline.Maintains control logs for data processing; i.e. bi-weekly totals, form counts, etc. Participates in training activities and departmental meetings as needed.Works with the campus schools and departments and other state agencies to verify quarterly dual employment report bi-weekly new hires dual employment report ensuring that employees are not claiming hours for multiple jobs during the same time period.Distributes documentation to UMB and UMCP System Payroll.Mails paper pay checks and contacts campus schools and units to validate addresses if an employee appears to have different addresses listed in home and check address fields of eUMB.Images, indexes and stores payroll documents such as payroll and leave adjustment forms, journal entries, and foreign national employee tax files each pay period.Processes payroll journal entries.Insert tax periods for new hires retro pay.Validate final payroll reports before and after net pay processing.Works with campus schools and departments to resolve issues with expired projects. Works with Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance, General Accounting and the schools or departments for appropriate action.Sets up foreign national employees and non-employees Login ID in the required Glacier system. Follows up with departments if employees did not complete Glacier after the setup.Note: The intent of this list of primary duties is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this job. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE: Four years of payroll experience, two years of which must have included knowledge of State and Federal Payroll Regulations and the use of tax tables to determine deductions.
OTHER:Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of complex and specialized payroll and data processing procedures used in processing the University payroll, of data processing procedures used in processing transactions on the financial and accounting system; of on-line data processing and terminology; of federal and state tax laws; of state and University rules, regulations, forms and procedures affecting payroll processing, of procedures for payroll benefit deductions. Skill in the use of tax tables to determine deductions; in the use of the computer terminal to update payroll data bases through batch and interactive processing; in processing payroll exceptions and streaming jobs to produce reports; in calculating net pay. Ability to evaluate conformity with established procedures; to maintain batch controls; to answer technical questions from USM staff; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work harmoniously with others.
Conditions of Employment:Employees in this job class may be required to work overtime to meet required deadlines.
Hiring Range: $54,500- $59,000 (commensurate with education and experience).
