Payroll Team Leader

The Role

The Payroll Supervisor (Team Leader) is primarily accountable for the payroll process to ensure its delivered efficiently & on time according to the Employment Agreements whilst meeting strict payroll deadlines. It also manages the Payroll Officers and provides support to the Payroll Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead, manage, develop and coach 3-5 payroll officers. Oversee the payroll processing with weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual deadlines (~3,000 employees). Oversee timesheet approvals and liaising with business unit stakeholders if there are delays. Review payruns and payroll officers work before finalization. Prepare and lodge payroll compliances relating to all statutory obligations, including taxation, superannuation and modern awards. Prepare and lodge group payroll tax for all business units including keeping up to date with payroll tax requirements. Understand and Interpret Employment contracts and Industrial Instruments including awards. When legislation changes, work with Payroll Manager and HR to understand, communicate and implement changes required. Develop strong internal and external relationships with key stakeholders. Manage, investigate and resolve staff pay disputes. Update changes in award rates in payroll system. Identify the needs of the payroll business and prepare guides and/or instructions. Liaise with HR/Operations prior to a new project commencement to ensure payroll can be processed as efficiency with limited manual intervention. When payroll errors occur, implement processes, reviews and checks and develop documentation to ensure the same error is avoided. Prepare the balance sheet reconciliations for key payroll accounts and investigate any differences. Provide information for workers compensation payments (minimal). Adhere to all payroll related queries and manage the payroll query inbox. Ensure accurate records of current employees is maintained. Ensure strong internal controls are being met and maintained. Be a key contact point for all escalation issues for payroll.

Report safety issues to immediate supervisor. Take steps to address safety issues and risk within your control/capability to do so.

The successful applicant will ideally have:

Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Payroll function; Construction or Mining industry is preferred and with some years in a supervisor capacity. Proficient in systems and understanding process flows. Experience in a high-volume environment and managing multiple employing legal entities. Experience supervising a team to achieve desired business outcomes. Experience with creating and embedding of process documentation. Strong knowledge of Payroll and Statutory requirements for the payroll function including superannuation, leave, tax legislation and related accounting rules, workcover, award, enterprise agreement interpretation and application. Strong understanding of complex EBA's and Awards. Advanced Excel skills and sound knowledge of other MS Office applications. Strong analytical and reporting skills. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills and also enjoys investigating and troubleshooting issues. Understanding of basic accounting principles, including general ledger coding. Experience with PayGlobal is preferred.
