The Emergency Department at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is seeking a board-certified/board eligible Pediatrician to join and expand the Pediatric Emergency Medicine team. Candidates are expected to see all types of pediatric emergencies and urgencies.
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine is a six-bed unit (one negative pressure room) in a 43-bed Emergency Department, though pediatric patients are seen throughout the ED, particularly in the trauma and psychiatric rooms. OLGMC is a 334-bed tertiary teaching hospital, regional stroke center, and the region’s only Level 2 trauma center. OLGMC sees the majority of the region’s deliveries, has a 6-bed pediatric unit (soon to expand to 12 and possibly an 8-bed PICU), and a 43-bed Level 3 NICU. Besides all the surgical specialties required of a trauma center, we have pediatric cardiology and pediatric gastroenterology on staff and will soon have pediatric orthopedic on staff.
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine is currently open from noon to 11pm, staffed by one full-time and six part-time pediatricians. Our pediatric volume is approximately 3800 visits/yr. Pediatricians are expected to see the full variety of pediatric emergencies and traumas and perform procedural sedations for fracture reductions and complex laceration repairs. We also are responsible for teaching second- and third-year residents from the local family Medicine program, and third year medical students from LSU medical school in New Orleans. We are looking to expand hours as new staffing allows. We enjoy an excellent collaborative relationship with the children’s hospital in town (PICU, pediatric surgery, neurology, endocrine available) as well as with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Trauma Center in Baton Rouge, and several other regional children’s hospitals.
The Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch.com has named Lafayette as the “happiest city in America.” The third largest metropolitan area in Louisiana, Lafayette also has been called the Tastiest Town in the South and a Topic Music Mecca, boasting thriving food and music scenes. Besides two symphony orchestras and two music festivals, we are the center of the French Cajun and Zydeco culture. Home of Louisiana’s second largest university, The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, we are a leader in excellent education from pre-K to post-graduate degrees. With over 30 city parks, including the newest Moncus Park, designed by the same firm that built New York City’s Central Park, this hub of the Sportsman’s Paradise offers many recreational opportunities.
