What you will do:

The primary function of an OMH New York Certified Peer Specialist is facilitating outreach with individuals currently in an outpatient mental health program and supporting sustained engagement with a multidisciplinary team of treatment providers.  They provide non-clinical services designed to support the individual from the unique perspective of someone who shares similar experiences.  Certified Peer Specialists draw from personal lived experience of psychiatric illness as well as professional training.  While not clinical in nature, the role of the peer specialist is critical in supporting individual informed decision making around treatment options that lead to individual/family driven outcomes. The Certified Peer Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate and motivator to individuals in order to improve their ability to manage continuing health and wellness, enhance engagement in care, increase their level of empowerment. prevent psychiatric or substance use disorder relapse and promote long term recovery. The Certified Peer Specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships within the framework of the NYCPS code of conduct. 

Responsibilities:

Teach individuals self-advocacy, self-efficacy, and empowerment skills.

Support engagement in treatment, bridging treatment gaps, and providing community transition support.

Provide access to peer recovery supports based on their knowledge of local resources and provide peer counseling.

Aid community connections, provide linkage with natural supports/transitional supports.

Provide pre-crisis and crisis support services as needed in consultation with the identified treatment team.

Facilitate/explore peer-led support groups on client identified topics.

Connect individuals to community-based recovery supports consistent with treatment, recovery, and discharge plans.

Non-clinical crisis support, especially after periods of hospitalization or incarceration.

Educating program participants about various modes of recovery.

Accompanying clients to medical or community appointments.

Raising awareness of existing social and other support services.

Linking participants to formal recovery supports.

Assisting with applying for benefits.

What you will need:

High School Diploma/GED Required.Valid OMH New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS)


Pay Range: $20.95 - $32.47

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
