The role you’ll contribute: Recovery is the process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. Through health, home, purpose and community we will work to guide clients toward the identification and achievement of specific goals defined by the client and specified in the Treatment Plan. Peer Specialist Services is a structured and scheduled therapeutic activity with an individual client or group, provided by a trained, self-identified consumer of mental health services.

A Peer Support Specialist is designed for an individual who has been in receipt of mental health services for serious mental illness or chemical dependency and is willing and purposeful in sharing and using their experiences, knowledge, and first-hand insight regarding behavioral health recovery and hope to the benefit of the clients served.

As a Kentucky Peer Specialist (KPS) you must complete 30 hours of training and passes both a written and oral test. The job of a KPS is not to replace current clinical mental health staff but to offer additional and/or alternative options to help people in their efforts to recover.

Regular supervision is required, and each qualified Kentucky Peer Specialist must earn at least 6 hours of continuing education each year.

The value you’ll bring to the team

Provide supportive services primarily to individuals who are transitioning from institutional settings into community-based housing with wraparound services Serve as an active member of the individual’s treatment team

Advocate for services requested by the individual

Assist in cultivating the individual’s ability to make informed, independent choices, to set goals/objectives and assist in gaining information and support from the community

Plan activities with the individual that lead to improved self-concepts through empowerment and self-determination opportunities

Act as a teacher and role model of behavioral health recovery and assist with the development of effective communication with other providers

Assist individuals in the development of Wellness Recovery Action Plans, Advance Directives for Mental Health Treatment, and/or crisis plans to avoid hospitalization

Offer hope of recovery from mental illness and/or substance use disorders by sharing their own recovery stories and by teaching individuals how to tell their own recovery stories effectively. Use unique recovery experience to model the value of every individual’s recovery experience and teach effective coping techniques and self-help strategies

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

High School Diploma/GED

Currently certified in good standing as a Kentucky Adult Peer Support Specialist Or must complete and receive certification for a Kentucky Department of Behavioral Health Adult Peer Support Specialist training within three months of employment.

Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable operating transportation.

Adult Peer Support Specialists must successfully complete the core competency training administered by the State of Kentucky.
