Job Overview:

The Peer Support Specialist processes families for WIC enrollment, orientation and benefit issuance and lactation support.

Qualifications:

Required:

High School Graduate or equivalentLacated, pumped or breastfed for at least 6 months

Preferred:

Bilingual

Scheduling Requirements:

Shift working 8:30am to 4:30pm; some evenings until 6:30pmMonday-FridayMay require travel to sitesFT

Essential Functions:

Provides age appropriate equipment is used for performing height and weight measurements for women and infantsFamiliar with healthy weight guides and growth charts for breastfeeding infantsMaintains patient documents and reports as requiredObtain and document an appropriate history of the breastfeeding mother and child-as part of WIC systemAnalyze assessment information to identify issues and/or problemsReviews WIC assessments and medical informationImplement the plan of care appropriate to the situation and acceptable to the motherProvide lactation education according to NJWIC Guidelines: Benefits, barriers, getting a good start with breastfeeding and help mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concernsDocuments breastfeeding planMake referrals according to established protocols to the CPA, Lactation Consultant, the mothers physician, a public health program in the community, or a social service agencyProvide telephone contacts to pregnant and breastfeeding women based on delivery dates and follow-up appointmentsProvides breastfeeding aidsParticipates in Breastfeeding Awareness/Outreach eventsProvides education in community organization
