Perinatal Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Perinatal Instructor reports to the Perinatal Education Supervisor. Is certified in a specific area of expertise. Instructs clients in topics related to their area of expertise while providing teaching which reflects ECHN's philosophies of family-centered maternity care and informed choice. Communicates effectively in both group and one to one settings and participates in program development and evaluation. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
+ Nationally recognized certification in one of the following: Certified Childbirth Educator, Certified Lactation Consultant, Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified CPR or First Aid Instructor or Certified Infant Massage Instructor.
ยท RN or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
+ 1 year experience in Maternal-Child health care setting.
COMPETENCIES:
+ Possesses basic computer skills.

Job-Specific Competency
1. Provides accurate, current and comprehensive information in classes following course outline. Collaborates with team members on course development, integrating current research from independent reading and seminars.
2. Allows flexibility within the program to respond to clients' questions and concerns. Answer questions fully and seeks additional information when needed. Provides time for individualized teaching when necessary.
3. Instructs class employing the principles of adult learning. Utilizes a variety of teaching techniques and visual aids. Designs teaching tools for class instruction and collaborates with Perinatal Education Supervisor to ensure all teaching materials are up-to-date.
4. Plans class material to meet participants' level of understanding. Ensures that requested topics are covered in class.
5. Relates to clients in a supportive, affirmative and open manner. Is sensitive and responsive to cultural differences. Displays approachability as evidenced by participants' comments on class evaluations.
6. Informs participants of their right and responsibility to make informed choices for themselves and their families related to health care options. Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages participants to make choices based on their own needs and preferences. Demonstrates acceptance of clients' feelings, rights and choices as evidenced by client feedback.
7. Consistently monitors course outline for inaccuracies or outdated materials. Assists Perinatal Education Supervisor in development of course outlines for new programs.
8. Utilizes class evaluations to determine accuracy and relevancy of material presented. Reviews and validates participants' evaluation data with Perinatal Education Supervisor. Makes suggestions for appropriate changes
9. Represents ECHN Maternity Services to the community through public events and social media.
