Perioperative Instrument Tech ll - FT/Afternoon - Trinity Health Oakland

POSITION PURPOSE
Functions as a member of the surgical team, providing perioperative, clinical, transportation and patient support within Perioperative Services. Responsible for prompt and effective problem resolution related to supplies and equipment. Communicates with multiple discipline, patients and families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assists operating room staff in facilitating surgical cases, using computerized preference cards as resources (referencing various types of cases and surgeons).
2. Assembles supplies for surgical cases using protocols for handling and storing sterile supplies. Assists nursing personnel on the sterile set-up of an operative room for specific procedure and surgeon. Includes such cases as craniotomies, total hips and open hearts.
3. Obtains, cleans and sets up equipment needed for surgery. Includes cleaning and assembling complicated equipment such as carousel suctions, stirrups, OR beds, and bed attachments, (i.e. cloward saddle)
4. Delivers specimens to the appropriate Pathology/Laboratory area. Fills formalin containers.
5. Performs careful cleaning and flash autoclaving of specialty instruments between cases.
6. Cleans and returns equipment and/or supplies to proper storage areas/CSR/other departments.
7. Assists in operation by holding retractors to provide sufficient exposure using good sterile technique.
8. Interacts with patients and performs skills and tasks for patients in relation to their developmental age, maturity level and cultural and spiritual preferences. Prepares and transports patients safely while maintaining modesty.
9. Under the directions of the OR nurse, assists with transfer, lifting and/or positioning of patients, utilizing correct body mechanics for an anesthetized patient. Assists in patient preparation by holding patient's limbs.
10. Cleans, stocks and maintains specialty carts and equipment. Monitors and maintains gas tank inventory. Maintains supplies and materials in a cost-effective manner, under the direction of the service coordinator.
11. Acts as relief for HUC, prioritizing intercom request, telephone calls and in contacting doctors, nursing units, SDS and Pre-Oh Holding. Keeps Board Coordinator informed of constant activity in the OR and concerned units. Performs basic TDS and SSI computer functions.
12. Maintains confidentiality of patient records/information. Attends in-service education program as needed.
13. Performs additional supportive duties as directed by the Supervisor, Board Coordinator, or RNs.
14. Performs scheduled and random inventory and restocks items when supply levels reach low levels in the OR suites. Daily room checks. Put away sterile supplies.
15. Monitor OR Board frequently to identify transportation, bed requirements, supplies, equipment and case cart needs for each case.
16. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.
17. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
18. Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.
19. Assists Radiology staff in the set-up, movement, image storage, and cleaning of radiation producing equipment
a. Assists technologist in performing radiologic procedures on patients of all ages:
b. Positioning of patients
c. Positioning of devices to complete procedure
d. Movement of patients on and off tables
20. Assists technologist in equipment:
e. Performs visual safety inspections of equipment and immediately reports to technician status
f. Assists the technologists in preparing images for reading.
g. Assists with room preparation:
h. Ensures patient areas are clean, "distraction-free" and ready to facilitate safe patient care
i. Ensures equipment is cleaned and ready for use at all times
j. Uses hospital practice in appropriate infection control practices
k. Ensures appropriate supplies are available for patient care

22. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
• Minimum 1 year of experience working in patient care in an operating room or minor procedure environment.
Education:
• High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Associates degree in health care related field or 1 year working experience in an operating room environment preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
• Successful completion of BCLS certification.
