The PGY1 Pharmacy Acute Care Residency Program Director’s (RPD) responsibilities include direct oversight, planning and growth of the PGY1 Pharmacy Acute Care Residency Program and the PGY1 acute care pharmacy residents. Program oversight duties include but are not limited to the following: American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accreditation, auditing and maintenance of ASHP standards throughout the residency year, maintaining activities necessary for Graduate Medical Education (GME) compliance, annual recruitment and retention of the residency class, identifying qualified preceptors, and building preceptor development programs.
Additional duties related to direct oversight of the residents include, but are not limited to the following: human resources (hiring, orientation, onboarding, timekeeping and scheduling, problem resolution, and constructive coaching, offboarding), development and maintenance of individual resident development plans, and coordination of education and research activities (including conference activities). The RPD may delegate duties related to the above to other accredited preceptors, but maintains ultimate responsibility.
The RPD will serve as a leader and role model for preceptor and resident development and mentorship. The RPD will also assist in the design of resident projects and proposals, and provide guidance for potential publication opportunities. The RPD will work collaboratively with other pharmacy and interdisciplinary leaders under the direction of the NAH Health System Director of Pharmacy to fulfill the mission of the residency as well as the organization’s research and educational missions.
The RPD is responsible for maintaining a pharmacy practice in a relevant field related to their RPD duties and will be assigned clinical staffing duties as needed.

Responsibilities

Administrative
* Oversees and Coordinates the Residency Advisory Council (RAC) Meetings.

* Coordinates pharmacy resident training and competency assessment.

* Responsible for pharmacy resident evaluations and goal setting.

* Super user for PHORCAS, PharmAcademic, or other applicable ASHP residency software required for maintaining accreditation.

* Oversees pharmacy resident recruitment and retention processes.

* Assists in ensuring high quality resident research experiences and publication.

* Writes, maintains, reviews, and regularly communicates policies and procedures related to the residency.

* Responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of pharmacy residency best practices and regulatory changes.

* Supports employee/staff engagement initiatives. Serves as a champion of organization culture, influencing culture change to support the NAH values.



Leadership
* Serves as a resource for resident and preceptors in

* Provides educational oversight and clinical development of residents and preceptors.

* Serves as a role model for department staff and participates in special projects.

* Collaborates with other pharmacy leaders and the pharmacy team to achieve compliance with hospital and department specific policies and procedures.

* Acts as a liaison for other departments as it relates to the residency.

* Demonstrates advance knowledge of Pharmacy Accreditation Standards

* Demonstrates engagement and fosters engagement in others.

* Serves on designated intra- and inter-departmental committees to improve patient care.



Patient Care
* Functions as a staff pharmacist when necessary to meet department workload requirements.

* Performs clinical services to optimize drug therapy and documents clinical interventions.

* Provides medication therapy management using medication-related protocols including pharmacokinetics, parenteral nutrition, serum creatinine and other therapeutic drug monitoring by utilizing clinical software and assessing relevant information.

* Advises physicians on use of formulary medications and suggests alternative therapeutic options.

* Provides accurate, clinically relevant drug information to physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

* Participates in code arrest response by providing information and assuring availability of medications.

* Identifies, prevents, and investigates potential and real adverse drug reactions and medication errors.

* Provides information required for drug related patient counseling.

* Reviews and interprets physician orders properly; screens for incompatibilities, interactions, duplicates, or contraindications.

* Competent using various pharmacy technology products such as electronic health records, automated dispensing machines, compounders, unit dosing, tube system, and clinical decision support/data mining tools.

* Supervises and is responsible for oversight of supportive personnel, licensed and non-licensed, and organizes/directs as needed.

* Reports adverse drug reactions, medication errors, and good catches.



Compliance/Safety
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost effective manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* Ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Pro-actively identifies opportunities for process improvement.

Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of Pharmacy - Required
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy - Preferred
Completion of a PGY1 and/or PGY2 Acute Care-focused Pharmacy Practice Residency - preferred


Certification & Licensures
Arizona State Board of Pharmacy license that is active and in good standing - Required
Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification in Applicable Acute Care Specialty – Required
BLS certification – Required, (or to be certified within 6 months of hire)
ACLS certification – Required, (or to be certified within 6 months of hire)
PALS certification – Required, (or to be certified within 6 months of hire)
Teaching and Learning Program Certificate of Completion - Preferred


Experience
Has completed a PGY1 and PGY2 Residency and a minimum of 1 year tertiary care medical center/health system experience -OR-
Has completed a PGY1 Residency and a minimum of 3 years tertiary care medical center/health system experience
-OR-
Has not completed a pharmacy residency and has a minimum of 5 years tertiary care medical center/health system experience
- Required
Minimum of 1 year of residency program director or coordinator experience - Preferred
