Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all departments services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medication for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate areas.

Roles and Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations

Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computers systems, and operational programsMaintains operational expertise and competency and actively provides coverage of at least two of the following:Central/distributive pharmacy operationsSterile compoundingDecentral/Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operationsControlled Substance Handling

AND at least one of the following:

Quality Assurance & USP SamplingMedication HistoryPurchasing and Inventory Management-OR-Maintains knowledge of the following:Central/Distributive PharmacyIV Room/Sterile CompoundingDecentral/Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operationsControlled substance handling

AND

Performs primary job function as Medication History technicianParticipates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems.Maintains expertise in electronic health record system and be able to accurately interpret electronic records as needed.Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patient-specific medication doses. Prevents improver drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products.Performs oral and injectable compoundingCarries out special projects or assignments as directed by supervisor or managerProperly process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department using approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.

Pharmacy Practice

Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medicationsPrepares and delivers medication in an accurate, safe, and timely manner

 

Teaching, Training, Precepting, and Mentorship

Mentors new staff and assists with trainingPrecepts and mentors pharmacy student rotations and actively engages in student learning experiences, if applicableSupports pharmacy residency experience, if applicableDetermines and finalizes competency

 

 

Quality Improvement, Regulatory Compliance, and Accreditation

Supports and participates in medication-use process improvements led by colleagues and peers.Supports regulatory compliance initiatives and supports institutional accreditation processes. Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

Licenses and Certification

Illinois Pharmacy Technician LicenseCertified Pharmacy Technician

Experience and Skills 

Required:

Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skillsFlexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessaryAbility to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customersAbility to follow direction from formal management personnel and informal supervisors (pharmacists) and work independentlyAbility to identify, mitigate, and assist in resolving pharmacy operational or program issuesKnowledge of medical terminologyMust be able to read, write, and speak conversational EnglishBasic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office

Preferred:

Ability to teach pharmacy technician studentsProficiency in hospital computer system technology and automationKnowledge and competence in aseptic techniques, hazardous drug compounding and USP 795, 797, and 800 standards (if applicable)Knowledge and competence in the medication reconciliation process
