Job Description
As a Pharmacist, you will evaluate medication orders for accuracy and thoroughness, resolve discrepancies through communication with the physician, clinical pharmacist, or nursing staff, and dispense medication. You will also assess feasibility, compound or verify the compounding of extemporaneous products, and recommend alternative products when appropriate. Additionally, you will prepare IV admixtures and compound sterile products including large volume parenteral, mini-bags, TPN solutions, and hazardous agents including cytotoxic drugs.
ResponsibilitiesEvaluate medication orders for accuracy and thoroughness.Resolve discrepancies of medication orders through communication with the physician, clinical pharmacist, or nursing staff.Dispense medication accurately.Assess feasibility and compound or verify the compounding of extemporaneous products.Recommend alternative products when appropriate.Prepare IV admixtures and compound sterile products including large volume parenteral, mini-bags, TPN solutions, and hazardous agents including cytotoxic drugs.Respond independently to non-evaluative drug information requests.Monitor and take appropriate action to ensure optimum patient drug therapy, drug selection, and minimal adverse drug reactions under the supervision of a more clinical pharmacist/manager.Dispense controlled substances and maintain perpetual inventory of controlled substances, ensuring legal requirements and departmental policies and procedures are consistently followed.Provide technical supervision of support personnel and oversee workflow and attendance to assure efficient operations.Verify technicians’ accuracy in the preparation and packaging of medications.Enter and verify computer entries and data for drug orders.Instruct patients/families on the safe use of medications and counsel them on potential adverse effects in a decentralized setting.Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading literature, attending related seminars and conferences, and completing continuing education credits as required.Participate in departmental and hospital education programs such as journal club, grand rounds, professional organizations, and other education programs.Participate in meetings and on committees, representing the department and the hospital in community outreach efforts as appropriate.Participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.Essential SkillsDoctoral degree from an accredited college of pharmacy or equivalent pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.1-2 years of direct patient care experience in a hospital setting.PHARMD - Licensed Pharmacist in the District of Columbia.Additional Skills & QualificationsCompletion of PGY-1 pharmacy residency preferred.Board certification preferred.Work Environment
The work schedule is Monday-Friday 7AM-3:30PM or Monday-Friday 10:30AM-7:00PM. The role requires working every other weekend.
