Pharmacy Intern

Job Summary: Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist according to established policies and procedures, assists the pharmacist in the efficient and accurate preparation, dispensing and delivery of pharmaceuticals and supplies. The depth and magnitude of the intern's involvement is directly related to their academic standing or year of professional education.

 

Responsibilities:

1. Consult with medical staff, nurses and other healthcare providers to coordinate the delivery of pharmaceuticals to patients.

2. Participate in educational programs and projects designed to improve the clinical and operational components of the department, and to develop the intern's philosophy relative to their responsibility in providing optimum care for the patient.

3. Assist the pharmacist in filling prescription orders and maintain appropriate records. Perform quality monitoring tasks as required.

4. Assist the pharmacist in the extramporaneous preparation of parental products, following strict aseptic technique. Prepare antimicrobials, biological and antineoplastic agents following pre-established guidelines for safe handling.

5. Package tablets, capsules and liquids for drug distribution using automated packaging equipment. Assist with bulk compounding of special products. Label products and complete appropriate packaging records according to hospital policy.

Qualifications:

Enrollment in a professional program at an accredited College of Pharmacy. Registered or eligible for registration as a Pharmacy Intern.Analytical ability necessary to assure swift resolution of fairly complex math programs.A thorough knowledge of generic / trade names, aseptic technique, safe handling of antimicrobials, biological, and hazardous materials.Verbal and written communication skills (good diction and pronunciation of the English language and drug names) to interact effectively with all levels of health care professionals.Demonstrates the ability to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, speed, and dependability.Must be able to take direction from pharmacists and refer clinical issues appropriately.Diplomacy, tact and listening skills a must as well as ability to read, interpret and write technical materials.Demonstrates computer keyboard familiarity and order entry skills, as well as light typing ability and capability to operate electronic dispensing equipment.Demonstrate manual dexterity and grip strength to safely perform complicated manipulation of sterile products.
