Pharmacy Intern
**Job Description:** This incumbent is enrolled as a student in a college of pharmacy for the first year of education. The incumbent is in a training and learning position as a part of a paid internship and demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in the execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The incumbent participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is an integral part of the pharmacy team. This position supports Pharmacy Services in all care locations (i.e., acute, community, ambulatory and specialty). **This posting is for Pharmacy Intern level 1, 2, 3 and 4's. These interns will work at our Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.** **Job Description Summary** The pharmacy student (intern) assists pharmacists to provide pharmacy services including the evaluation and input of licensed independent practitioner orders/prescriptions, and the technical functions of drug procurement, preparation, and distribution. These and all other duties are completed under the supervision of a pharmacist. Expectation: Become proficient in pharmacy technical functions and the basic pharmacology and utilization of medications. At Intermountain Medical Center (IMC), the inpatient pharmacy intern program is a unique setting in which we have a large group of pharmacy students from both pharmacy schools and with students from all years of schooling. As an inpatient pharmacy intern at IMC, your job responsibilities advance as you progress through school. The pharmacy intern program at IMC allows you to experience the full spectrum of inpatient care; from Central Pharmacy operations to medication history collection to managing clinical consults. First year pharmacy interns are typically expected to complete their first year understanding how the hospital functions by working Central Pharmacy Operations. Upon starting their second year, pharmacy interns begin working directly with their patients to collect accurate medication histories. In their final year, pharmacy interns will have the opportunity to staff clinical shifts in which they assist the pharmacists with therapeutic consults, perform medication education, and discharge Transplant patients. An inpatient pharmacy intern position at IMC will also allow you to further develop the skills necessary for a future residency position or for job placement by connecting you with pharmacists who will provide mentorship throughout the program. The hours and shifts vary depending on your year in school, however, the minimum expectation is 8-10 hours per week; additional hours are often available, if desired. Scheduled shifts are developed based on the preferences and availabilities of all interns within the program. **Scope** Pharmacy Intern is a training, learning position. Students of an accredited school of pharmacy are required to complete training hours that may be part of a paid internship. (Pharmacy Intern Level I-IV are the position titles designated according to a student’s year in pharmacy school.) The Pharmacy Intern Level I is primarily expected to staff in Central Pharmacy Operations. Pharmacy interns will assist in the central pharmacy workflow. Training primarily includes pharmacy automation, non-sterile compounding, as well as medication storage, dispensing and procurement. The pharmacy intern will utilize medication references to assist the pharmacist with clinical questions and medication dispensing while maintaining regulatory standards. Staffing in central pharmacy operations gives the intern exposure to a vast array of medications utilized throughout the entire hospital. The Pharmacy Intern Level II is primarily expected to collect accurate medication histories from admitted patients. Pharmacy interns will staff alongside pharmacists in areas such as Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, and the Emergency Department to identify admitted patients who need medication histories collected. Collecting medication histories allows pharmacy interns to interact directly with their patients and learn how to utilize additional resources to complete an accurate list. While completing a medication history, pharmacy interns are encouraged to learn the medications and ask appropriate questions in order to communicate information to the clinical pharmacist. The Pharmacy Intern Level III is primarily expected to collect accurate medication histories from admitted patients and will begin training to staff clinical shifts. Pharmacy interns will staff alongside pharmacists in areas such as Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, and the Emergency Department to identify admitted patients who need medication histories collected. Collecting medication histories allows pharmacy interns to interact directly with their patients and learn how to utilize additional resources to complete an accurate list. While completing a medication history, pharmacy interns are encouraged to learn the medications and ask appropriate questions in order to communicate information to the clinical pharmacist. In addition to medication histories, pharmacy interns will begin training modules with the anticipation of staffing clinical shifts. Training will primarily include learning to manage the Collaborative Practice Agreements for insulin, Vancomycin, and Warfarin. Additional training will be provided for medication education and the discharging of newly transplanted patients. The Pharmacy Intern Level IV is expected to both collect accurate medication histories from admitted patients and to staff clinical shifts with a pharmacist. Pharmacy interns will staff alongside pharmacists in areas such as Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, and the Emergency Department to identify admitted patients who need medication histories collected. Collecting medication histories allows pharmacy interns to interact directly with their patients and learn how to utilize additional resources to complete an accurate list. While completing a medication history, pharmacy interns are encouraged to learn the medications and ask appropriate questions in order to communicate information to the clinical pharmacist. After completing training, pharmacy interns will have the opportunity to staff clinical shifts on the weekend to assist pharmacists with their responsibilities. During these shifts, pharmacy interns will primarily manage the Collaborative Practice Agreements for insulin, Vancomycin, and Warfarin.
