Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._ **Responsibilities:** Pharmacy Intern – NYS Intern Permit Required A pharmacy intern with a valid NYS intern permit may perform all pharmacist functions under supervision, as allowed by law, rule, or regulation. These functions include preparing, compounding, and dispensing prescriptions in compliance with state and federal laws. **Drug Distribution Responsibilities:** + Prepare medication orders for pharmacist verification, ensuring accuracy in medication selection, quantity, packaging, and documentation. + Operate and maintain automated systems or technology. + Stock medication areas, including automated systems, according to demand. + Rotate inventory, checking expiration dates and removing expired medications. + Utilize medication delivery systems efficiently (e.g., pneumatic tubes, hand delivery). + Troubleshoot and resolve medication use system issues, communicating resolutions promptly. + Triage phone calls and handle medication requests, deferring clinical decisions to a pharmacist. + Maintain professional communication with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and hospital staff. **Sterile Compounding Compliance:** + Complete all required training and competencies, including aseptic skill assessments and written exams every six months. + Properly use and maintain compounding technology, including workflow devices and robotics. + Demonstrate competency in selecting appropriate compounding products or devices. + Follow all departmental policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards. + Adhere to proper aseptic techniques, garbing, cleaning, and storage requirements, including hazardous medications. + Report safety concerns and demonstrate infection prevention techniques. + Implement mitigation strategies for safe handling of hazardous medications. **Pharmacist-Supervised Activities:** + Check CII Safe controlled substance pulls and Pyxis manual pulls. + Precheck IV products. + Answer drug compatibility and drug information questions after pharmacist review. + Communicate with nurses and providers as directed by a pharmacist. + Troubleshoot dispensing issues. + Participate in special projects related to quality assurance, medication safety, and operational or clinical initiatives. **Medication Dispensing Responsibilities:** + Fill medications for pharmacist verification. + Enter data for new prescriptions. + Answer patient phone inquiries regarding deliveries and refills. + Queue refills for filling. + Dispense prescriptions at point of sale. + Process insurance billing. + Provide patient counseling. **Additional Pharmacist-Supervised Responsibilities:** + Transfer prescriptions between pharmacies. + Answer drug interaction and drug information questions after pharmacist review. + Administer immunizations (if certified). + Perform advanced troubleshooting on dispensing issues. + Participate in quality assurance, medication safety, and other operational or clinical initiatives. **Qualifications** + **Education:** + Completion of the first professional year in an **ACPE-accredited** pharmacy program, **OR** + Graduate of a **non-accredited program** who has passed the **NAPLEX** and received board approval for a limited (intern) permit. + **Foreign graduates** must have an equivalency determination accepted by the **NYS Board of Pharmacy** . + **Skills & Abilities:** + Strong communication skills, attention to detail, independent judgment, and problem-solving abilities. + **Certification:** + **Valid NYS Limited (Intern) Permit** (Required). **EOE Minorities / Females / Protected Veterans / Disabled:** The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University’s mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create – and Make the World Ever Better.
