Pharmacy Manager - Pharmacy - Full-Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt)

Oversee and participates in the orientation, instruction, training, and supervision of pharmacists, technicians and pharmacy students. Planning and participating in pharmacists’ development.  Provides in-service educational programs concerning the therapeutic aspects of patient care to pharmacists and other health professionals.

Updates the pharmacy staff regarding the development and implementation of pharmacy specific policies and procedures as well as hospital policies and procedures that affects the pharmacy department.

Manages non-formulary requests for drugs, and participates in Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee activities.

Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with medical center staff members, other hospital departments and strategic business unit leaders to promote cooperation and efficiency in providing and meeting patients’ pharmaceutical care needs.

Manages the development and implementation of new clinical pharmacy services and assures continuity of ongoing clinical pharmacy programs.  Plans and conducts clinical pharmacy services that integrates with the overall distributive requirement of the department.

Manages and mentors all pharmacists in standard approach to patient monitoring and problem solving.

Monitor pharmacists’ activities regarding utilization surveillance and clinical activities and provide instruction/education as necessary.

Assists physicians with drug selection and therapeutic regimens and furnishes drug information to ensure appropriate drug therapy.

Collaboratively, coordinates/implements educational training and competency programs for pharmacists and pharmacy residents.

Develops communication systems to respond to problems or emergency requests from patient care units.

Regularly conducts and/or reviews inspections of medication use areas.

Responsible for understanding and improving department revenue cycle.

Keeps administration regularly informed of activities and problems within the department.

Identifies and acts upon cost avoidance in drug therapy by promoting more cost-effective regimens, drugs, and reducing waste.  Develops and utilizes evaluation methods for determining patient- care impact and cost-effectiveness of clinical and distributive pharmacy services. Conducts target drug programs and drug usage evaluations as needed and reports results to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Develops and implements system changes in response to adverse drug events, findings from MUEs literature reports, and occurrence reports.  Participates and contributes in departmental quality assurance programs.

Facilitates the development, implementation and maintenance of the clinical pharmacy program, including treatment protocols, formulary changes, and clinical pathways.

Maintains and improves systems of medication distribution.

Assures appropriate drug utilization by interacting with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, patients, and others to provide appropriate drug therapy data collection, problem solving, drug information, and by making sound recommendations.

Develops and monitors the hospital‘s policies and procedures regarding utilization of medications in collaboration with the medical staff and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Coordinate and participates in the development of the hospital’s Formulary and related Pharmacy &Therapeutics activities.

Monitors drug therapy, utilizing patient profiles and medical record documents for accuracy, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, contraindications, allergies and sensitivities on assigned patient care areas.

Supports the Director by contributing in developing operational systems and procedures for the Pharmacy Department’s Clinical Division that are in accordance with the guidelines of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and state hospital codes.

Manages the review, tracking and compilation of data regarding adverse drug events.

Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the safe compounding of sterile and non-sterile products.

Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the security of controlled substances.

Maintains effective control of inventory and minimizes the incidence of lost patient charges.

Performs all other duties as assigned.  10%


Under general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Services, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager manages the clinical pharmacy program including developing, monitoring, evaluating and coordinating clinical pharmacy services that promote desirable patient outcomes. The Clinical Pharmacy Manager is responsible for collaborating with multidisciplinary team to assist with problem identification and resolution, cost containment issues, implementation of new clinical programs and protocols, and systems/ performance measures including attending committee meetings. The position is responsible for formulary management and protocol development, policies, procedures, medication evaluation and the standardization of medical care for the department including peer review of pharmacy dosing protocols. Other duties may include supervision of clinical activities and training of pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students.
