About this role: 

To assist the Pharmacists in carrying out the functions and activities of the Pharmacy Department in order to provide pharmacy services for patients and other appropriate individuals and groups. Supports the pharmacy in the areas of inventory, preparation, distribution, and regulatory compliance.  May require patient medication history completion and medication or supply procurement and management as needed. Possess knowledge of operating automated technology and multiple computer systems and software. Possess the ability to triage multiple tasks simultaneously. Possess the absence of a criminal history related to the ability to work with drugs. Travel and shift coverage at Knox Hospital is required as needed.

Education: 

High School Diploma or GED certificate required.

Licensure & Certification:

Indiana State Board of Pharmacy Technician or Intern/Extern licensure.

Experience: 

Previous hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.

General Responsibilities: 

Medication Management: Obtains and selects medications from inventory supply with accuracy. Packages, labels, and dispenses medications according to all applicable requirements. Fills, updates, and delivers medication trays and kits to all appropriate areas in the hospital. Properly records replenishment logs as necessary. Precisely and accurately fills and processes medications for pharmacist verification and delivers completed orders to appropriate nursing station in a timely fashion. Appropriately understands and utilizes barcoding labeling system and techniques. Ensures every medication that leaves the pharmacy is properly and accurately labeled and barcoded. Exhibits understanding and skill in utilizing USP <795> techniques for non-sterile product compounding if needed.Sterile Compounding: Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene and garbing as per USP <797> and <800> and hospital policies. Exhibits understanding and skill in utilizing USP <797> and <800> aseptic techniques for sterile product compounding. Possesses the ability to compound parenteral nutrition, hazardous drugs and other complex pharmaceuticals. Understands beyond use dating and appropriate use and application of pharmacy expiration dating. Shows compliance and proficiency with daily and monthly cleaning of clean rooms, hoods and ante room areas. Maintains compounding and batching logs as designated USP <797> and <800> guidelines. Utilizes ordering and inventory mechanisms for maintaining intravenous inventory and supply stock levels.Patient Medication History Completion: Demonstrates the ability to complete thorough, accurate, and detailed patient medication histories. Properly interviews a patient and/or family member regarding his or her medication regimen. Uses appropriate interviewing skills to obtain the correct medication data needed to complete a proper medication history. Has the ability to communicate with different patient demographics. Utilizes outside resources like physician offices and retail pharmacies to obtain clarifications and identify gaps in a patient home medication list. Generates, comprehends, and transcribes accurate patient medication list into the pharmacy computer software. Has a broad awareness of medications, their indications, and their strengths.Triages and answers phone calls in a positive and helpful manner. Is able to troubleshoot and resolve all possible telephone requests such as: missing medications, refill requests, automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) stocking issues, etc. Knowledge of distinguishing pharmacist required questions and technician capable inquiries needed.Ensures regulatory requirements for all areas of Medication Management, USP <795>, <797>, and <800>, and controlled substances are performed, and record-keeping is maintained correctly.Possesses knowledge of procedures for operating the Omnicells. Efficiently and accurately replenishes, loads, unloads, and maintains inventory including in the main pharmacy. Ensures expiration dating and rotation of stock as required. Comprehends and processes narcotic reconciliation within all Omnicells. Demonstrates the ability to analyze and complete daily surveillance reporting requirements. Troubleshoots problems when they occur and is able to open tickets with Omnicell when appropriate.Exhibits the ability to adapt to a dynamic workflow and possible changes in hours and/or job function relating to workflow requirements. Able to modify workflow as required by patient census, acuity, and staffing. Communicates workflow changes effectively. Maintains versatility in activities requiring frequent changes.Uses downtime as opportunity to perform essential duties required to complete on a reoccurring basis (i.e. stocking, batching, cleaning, outdating, performing inspections and audits, etc.)Maintains an awareness of the age-based needs of patients including, but not limited to, dosage forms, concentrations, and frequencies, and communicates all unusual medication/order requests to the pharmacist in a timely manner.Assists the purchaser with monitoring and maintenance of inventory in the pharmacy which includes, but is not limited to, stocking/restocking, cleaning, cycle counting, and ordering to par level.Attitude - Provides highest quality service and meeting customers' needs with utmost kindness, care, compassion, courtesy, empathy, respect and friendliness.
