UPMC Chautauqua is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, Assoc to join our team and support the expansion of pharmacy services in the Emergency Department. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals transitioning from retail to a hospital-based pharmacy career with a focus on direct patient care. In addition to performing general technician duties, the technician will be responsible for gathering medication histories for new hospital admissions, including drug name, dose, route, frequency, indication, and last dose time.
The role also involves reviewing and updating patient allergies, resolving medication history discrepancies, and collecting information through patient interviews, caregivers, retail pharmacies, and other sources. All gathered information must be accurately documented in the electronic health record. Responsibilities:
Consistently prepares cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy) using aseptic techniques in the Sterile Product area. Procures and maintains inventory levels for pharmacy stock rooms, automated carousels, and dispensing machines on a daily basis. Retrieves and returns discontinued medications, ensuring proper credit procedures and inventory adjustments. Practices appropriate hand hygiene in both pharmacy and patient care areas to ensure infection control. Participates in the medication distribution process, including medication cassettes, emergency carts, and controlled substances in accordance with policies and regulations. Finalizes sales transactions, adhering to proper cash handling procedures and policies. Ensures safe and secure medication storage, following Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations. Assists in training pharmacy personnel and students, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, such as HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
