Summary This position is located in the Pharmacy Department at the Hopi Health Care Center (HHCC), located in Polacca, AZ. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Pharmacy Technician and involves duties requiring specialized skills and an extensive knowledge of applied pharmacy practice. The incumbent demonstrates the ability to independently assess job related tasks and executes plans to insure these tasks are completed in a reasonable time. Responsibilities Prescription processing and outpatient care, bulk compounding, maintaining inventory and supplies, unit inspections, participation in ongoing quality improvement activities and safety management, and release of chronic medication refills and Over the Counter (OTC) medications. Verifies accuracy of label generated with the correct patient name, medical identification number, physician, date written, drug name, strength, dosage form and quantity. Interprets the compounding product card, follows standardized formulas and procedures in weighing, measuring, and mixing bulk quantities. Maintains daily filling logs and other needed data after restocking these systems. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): For positions at GS-4 and above: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of: Pharmaceutical nomenclature; Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:GS-5: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals; types prescription labels; calculates doses to match physicians order; fills prescriptions; fills the unit-dose medication cart; repackages drugs into usable size; maintains pharmacy store room and hospital drug stocks; records necessary information on control logs. Explains pharmacy prescriptions to patients as necessary. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses. OR Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience. NOTE: Successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience required for GS-5. OR Possess a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-5 grade level. GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include: Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals; prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy; manufactures products to fill a single prescription or drug order; inspects final products for accuracy and delivery. Records prescription refills and dispensing of over-the-counter drugs into patient's medical record. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level.
