Pharmacy Technician- Clinic

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares and rooms the patient by gathering/documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, and/or medications).Performs point-of-care laboratory procedures (i.e. INR) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions/infection control guidelines. Maintains quality control of point-of-care testing procedures.Performs services and functions within assigned area(s) where complex pharmaceutical patient care processes require the utilization of advanced skills and knowledge beyond those routinely required across pharmacy technician roles. Works primarily in clinic patient care environment, responsible for: maintaining Epic shared patient lists, billing/insurance coordination, document control/maintenance/scanning, prescription and laboratory orders, prescription test claims, interpreter coordination, and inventory/supply ordering and management,Serves as an expert with equipment and technology in specialized area. Problem solves technical issues in the specialized area as they arise. Ensures documents and records are accurate and completed timely.Provides basic patient instructions on the performance of routine tasks or skills. Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, pre-approved care algorithms, appointment scheduling, patient registration, referral management. Refers questions to pharmacists, and physicians/providers/medical team per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.Communicates and acts as a system resource for patients, pharmacists, physicians/providers/medical team to ensure smooth clinic flow and makes adjustments as necessary. Interprofessional communication is completed using various methods of communication including but not limited to: telephone, Microsoft Teams, Epic Secure Chat, InBasket Messaging, Epic Telephone Encounters, Progress Notes, etc). Effectively communicates accurate and timely information with the patient. Patient communication will occur via telephone or sent via MyChart and patient letters. Problem solves complex problems and ensures that issues are escalated and closed as needed.Identifies quality improvement opportunities based on specialized skill set to ensure safe, effective, and efficient services and patient care. Provides input to and supports implementation of operational changes, advancements, and site and system standardization.Complies with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Keeps current with changes in the specialized field and collaborates with department leadership to adopt best practices. Holds others accountable to best practices in the specialized area.Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

License/Registration/Certification Required:

Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board needs to be obtained within 2 years, orPharmacy Technician Certified (ExCPT) issued by the National Healthcareer Association needs to be obtained within 2 years.If working in WI: Registered as a Pharmacy Technician through Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, application must be submitted prior to start date.If working in IL: Registered as a Pharmacy Technician through Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, application must be submitted prior to start date with license obtained within 60 days of date of submission.

Education Required: High School Graduate

Experience Required: Typically requires 5 years of experience in hospital or retail pharmacy technician role, depending on specialty area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.Will occasionally lift and carry up to 10 lbs, and rarely lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Lifts, carries and/or pushes/pulls various items (bags, boxes, carts, etc.) while utilizing proper technique.Must have functional speech, vision, hearing and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skillsWill be exposed to the following hazards on a frequent basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids. Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as neededOperates all equipment necessary to perform the job
