Overview Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Director, Manager, Supervisor and/or Pharmacists, the Pharmacy Technician prepares and distributes medications. Performs other duties as assigned. 1 week on/ 1 week off Night shift Great shift differientials Thurs-Wed 8:00 pm - 6:30 am Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepares and packages medications (oral and intravenous) for delivery to automated medication dispensing systems and/or designated medication areas using manual or automated packaging methods. Retrieves, counts, measures, and compounds drugs (sterile and non-sterile) under the direction of the Pharmacist using barcode technology. Delivers medications and supplies safely and accurately to the nursing unit, stock area and/or automated dispensing cabinet. Has a working knowledge of the functionality of all equipment and technology in the department. Accurately fills automated medication dispensing systems. Matches medication to dispensing labels and selects appropriate components for dispensed product. Assists in inventory control of drug supplies and solutions for the pharmacy department. Performs inventory checks to help ensure stock does not fall below required levels, confirms items are properly stored, and reviews expiration dates to rotate or retrieve items according to their date. Checks pharmacy inventory and automated medication dispensing system stock for outdated and unused items. Returns discontinued and unused medication to pharmacy for credit (if applicable), re-stocking and/or disposal. Removes outdated items from pharmacy dispensing areas and automated medication dispensing systems. Demonstrates competency and adherence to all required elements of United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapters 795 and 797. Prepares all non-chemotherapy sterile admixtures including but not limited to Dialysate, Epidural, TPN and Investigational IV drugs, Compounding of sterile chemotherapy admixtures is allowable only as part of a training program and competency in preparation for advancement to a Pharmacy Technician 3 position Places IV order (non-chemotherapy) with wholesaler and processes receipt and stocking of drugs when delivered. Orders, restocks and maintains IV room inventory (non-chemotherapy) and provides general maintenance of IV stock area, including monitoring of outdated drugs and beyond use dating. Processes basic drug orders through pharmacy wholesaler, receives and restocks medications once delivered. Cleans equipment and sterilizes glassware according to prescribed methods. Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages. Responsible for intra-departmental communication. Education and Experience High School Diploma or equivalent required Graduate from Pharmacy Technician Program preferred Certification and Licensure Pharmacy Technician Licensure required Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Certification through NHA required. Skills and Abilities Good interpretive/analytical skills for medication dosage calculations Basic computer skills Good interpersonal skills Special Physical Demands The Special Physical Demands are considered essential job function of the position with or without accommodations. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to feel, finger, handle, or grasp items for fine motor skills; reach with hands and arms, and talk/ hear. Must be able to crouch or squat to reach items. Push carts. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
