GENERAL SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Technician – Meds to Beds works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist as stated by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. The position assists the pharmacist and other health care professionals by providing and coordinating bedside medication delivery services. Reports to the Pharmacy Operations Manager – Outpatient.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Supports all Meds-to-Beds service-related activities, from prescription intake to bedside delivery at time of patient discharge.
+ Coordinates with patient’s healthcare providers to gather appropriate paperwork, prescription billing information, and prescriptions to optimize medication therapy under the direction of the pharmacist.
+ Assists in establishing policies and procedures specific to the Meds-to-Beds program.
+ Serves as primary Ambulatory Pharmacy resource to facilitate access and resolve discharge medication-related insurance issues.
+ Uses computer and relevant programs to access patient records to charge/credit patients for medications.
+ Optimizes workflow by organizing and prioritizing phone calls and window traffic and directing pharmacist where needed.
+ Recognizes and prioritizes stat and emergency medication orders.
+ Appropriately uses and maintains all equipment ensuring it is clean and in working order.
+ Maintains appropriate stock levels through ordering and stock rotation, and removal of expired medications.
+ Ensures appropriate storage of medications in all pharmacy areas.
+ Compounds and/or prepackages hazardous medications, oral suspensions, ointments/creams, inhalants, and tablets.
+ Accurately prepares patient-specific doses with correct medication, concentration/strength, and dose.
+ Labels patient medications properly and applies auxiliary labels when necessary.
+ Develops rapport with patient care units by being highly visible and available to serve their needs and address concerns as they arise.
+ Performs all other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
+ Required Licenses and/or Certifications
+ Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy required at the time of hire.
+ Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
+ None preferred.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
+ Required Education and Experience
+ High school diploma or equivalent required at the time of hire.
+ Two or more years of experience in a community-based retail or hospital outpatient pharmacy or equivalent training and experience required.
+ At time of hire, a record of completion for all education, licenses, training and/or certifications is required.
+ Continuous certification and/or maintenance of state licensures, certifications, training, educational and application requirements is required during employment.

+ Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Requires skills necessary to verify medication information with computer records, and appropriate documentation associated with medications.
+ Highly motivated, enthusiastic, and empathetic team player who takes initiative.
+ Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
+ Excellent time management skills, able to shift priorities and able to work independently and problem solve in a fast paced, fluid environment.
+ Possesses strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills as well as, the ability to deal effectively and courteously with a variety of departmental, hospital personnel, and patients when obtaining and/or dispensing medications and ability interact with and build collegial relationships with diverse individuals.
+ Basic Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications like Word, managing email, navigating the internet, basic file management, data entry, understanding operating systems, and the ability to troubleshoot minor computer issues; essentially, the ability to use common software applications to perform basic tasks effectively.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Pharmacy employees work in or near a clinical patient care environment with minimal exposure to hazards such as excess noise, dust, or extremes in temperature. Minimal or occasional exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a healthcare environment. Minimum adverse working conditions related to the proximity and services of the clinical healthcare services
