**A Brief Overview**
Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collection following approved techniques and policies for hospital inpatients and clinic outpatients. The Phlebotomist also organizes specimen collection requests, performs patient clinical laboratory specimen collection procedures, specimen transport, specimen processing, testing dispersal, point-of-care testing procedures, and other pre-analytic functions following established standards and practices.
**What you will do**
+ Collect blood and other specimen collection and processing procedures in a competent manner that does not result in the need for repeat collections or valid complaints from patients or clients.
+ Properly identify patients before specimen collection, be able to explain the collection procedure and provide the necessary preparation and collection instructions to patients.
+ Complete patient registration and test order computer data entry as required by established standards and procedures.
+ Label, transport or store collected specimens as directed in an accurate and timely manner.
+ Communicate with internal and external customers in a professional and efficient manner via telephone, pager or in person.
+ Interpret inpatient and outpatient test orders to determine appropriate collection time and specimen types to be collected.
+ Perform selected point-of-care testing according to established standards and procedures.
+ Assist with analysis, collection and maintenance of records as required by regulatory agencies and/or federal, state, or local law.
**Essential Qualifications**
The individual must be able to work the hours specified. **Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:**
+ High School or GED Equivalent
+ Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
+ Less than 1 year Related experience and/or training
