Inpatient Phlebotomist

The Inpatient phlebotomist draws patients on hospital inpatient nursing units, One-Day Surgery Dept., Pre-Admission Testing and Short-Stay unit. When the hospital is experiencing a patient surge, a phlebotomist(s) may also be assigned to the Emergency Room.

 

The Inpatient phlebotomist draws blood on admitted patients.  There are three shifts: 5a-1p, 1p-9p and 9-7am.  The 5a-1p inpatient phlebotomist is expected to draw 25-30 patients on early morning rounds. This includes routine, STAT and ALERT draws. Inpatient is a fast-paced, customer-focused environment with high patient volume.  The ability to work well within a team of phlebotomists is required. Communicating often and effectively with your team is essential.  1 year experience; ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician is preferred.

 

Outpatient Phlebotomist

The Outpatient phlebotomist draws walk-in patients at the main hospital campus. Appointments are not required and volume/traffic flow changes hourly. Outpatient phlebotomists are responsible for interpreting prescriptions, or seeking assistance with complex orders, and then ordering the labs in the computer. Patient flow is monitored very closely to assure the majority of outpatients do not wait longer than 15 minutes for service. High levels of customer service are expected and essential to good patient relations.

 

Outpatient is a fast-paced, customer-focused environment with high patient volume and high customer service standards.  The ability to work well within a team of phlebotomists is required. Communicating often and effectively with your team is essential.  1 year experience; ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician is preferred.

 

 

Responsibilities

Inpatient Phlebotomist

Collects blood specimens on newborns to senior citizens through venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick Obtains blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patientLabels tubes at the patient bedside and initialsDraws routine, STAT and ALERT (stroke, medical response) specimensMaintains 100% compliance with positive patient identification Responds to various ALERTS throughout the hospital campusAssists in the specimen processing area when not on the floor or responding to alerts by receiving specimens collected on the floor by nurses, answering phones, stocking collection supplies, etc.Uses various computer applicationsPractices universal precautions at all timesRespects patient confidentiality

Outpatient Phlebotomist

Maintains 100% compliance with positive patient identification Collects blood specimens on newborns to senior citizens through venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick Obtains blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patientLabels tubes in front of patients and initials tubesUses various computer applicationsPractices universal precautions at all timesRespects patient confidentiality

Outreach Phlebotomist

Collect blood specimens on young children to senior citizens through venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick Obtain blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patientLabel tubes appropriately with initials, date and timePrepare specimens for shipment to testing lab (s)Interpret physician orders and perform computer order entry accuratelyProperly instruct patients in specimen collection, e.g., clean catch urinesMaintain work area in a clean and orderly mannerRegister patients and perform order entry accuratelyScan documents into the medical recordSecure patient signatures on ABN’sSecure patient signature on consentsOpen facility/Close facility

Nursing Homes

Travel to nursing home accounts in Monmouth and Ocean counties using own vehicle or hospital vehicle.

Collect blood specimens residents of Nursing Homes through venipunctureObtain blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patientLabel tubes at the bedside with initials, date and time Interpret physician orders and perform computer order entry accurately Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required

 

Work Experience:

Phlebotomy experience preferred (Inpatient)

Three years' experience as ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician preferred (Outreach)

 

Licenses and Certifications:

Certification preferred

   

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Proficient computer skills required for registering patients and ordering lab tests

Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills to effectively relate with all members of the healthcare team
