Job Description
The Certified Phlebotomist aims to serve patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening standards. The Phlebotomist shall draw quality blood samples while creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.
ResponsibilitiesDraw quality blood samples, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and perform decontamination.Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers in a courteous manner.Collect specimens according to established procedures and clearly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods.Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after the collection process.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store samples according to required temperatures.Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Perform other duties as assigned.Essential SkillsVenipuncture experience in a fast-paced environment.Reliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experience.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.Additional Skills & QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED.Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment Required2 years of experience requiredExcellent patient interaction skills both in person and by phone.Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.Work Environment
The work environment includes working in your community, particularly in an oncology center. The role may require sitting or standing for long periods and the ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Work hours are typically from 8am - 5pm.
