Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The phlebotomist will be responsible for collecting, processing, and storing specimens according to established procedures.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.Update patient information as needed.Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.Explain the venipuncture blood drawing and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Understand and follow physicians' orders accurately.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport.Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes.Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of the specimen for transport.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to patients when needed.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.0-2 years of relevant experience.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with all types of draws, specifically with geriatric patients.Familiarity with thyroid testing and handling urine samples.Work Environment
The position is located in a medium-sized Medstar office, typically serving about 25 patients. The work environment is fast-paced and requires adherence to strict protocols and procedures to ensure patient safety and specimen integrity.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00
