Responsibilities:

Procure appropriate blood specimens using venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick techniques. Instruct patients on collection procedures for self-collected laboratory specimens and collect other types of samples as needed. Transport specimens from collection areas to the laboratory while following established safety procedures. Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond to telephone inquiries promptly. Demonstrate reliability and independent judgment, prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs and accepting appropriate authority. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and personnel policies. Perform documentation duties, including entering demographic information, test orders, and managing sample data using computer systems. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents; inform technical staff and supervisors of unusual incidents.
