Job Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperature.Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department training sessions.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.Additional Skills & QualificationsMinimum of 1 year of Phlebotomy experience preferred.Experience in various PSCs and doctors’ offices.Ability to travel to different locations including North Charleston, Summerville, Goose Creek, and Charleston.Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.Ability to expense mileage.Experience with hard sticks and needles, urine, thyroid testing.Experience working with patients of all ages.Work Environment
The work schedule is from 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Friday, but may vary. The role involves working in various PSCs, doctors’ offices, hospitals, urgent care settings, and clients' facilities. The job requires traveling to different locations, and mileage can be expensed. The position involves using standard phlebotomy equipment and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00
