Job Description

The Phlebotomist aims to serve patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening standards. The Phlebotomist shall draw quality blood samples while creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.

ResponsibilitiesExperience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers in a courteous manner.Collect specimens according to established procedures.Properly explain the process of venipuncture and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required in a clear and courteous manner.Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after the collection process.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all physicians' orders.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport.Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection container/tube, accurately label, and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Perform other duties as assigned.Essential SkillsVenipuncture experience in a fast-paced environmentReliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experienceProficiency with Microsoft Office SuiteMinimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital settingValid driver's license issued in the state of residenceMust be willing to travel throughout assigned geography about 100% of the timeAdditional Skills & QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GEDValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (CA, LA, NV, and WA require certification)Excellent patient interaction skills both in person and by phoneStrong attention to detail and the ability to work independentlyWork Environment

The work environment includes the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, the ability to lift 20 pounds, and working hours from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The position involves working at an oncology center with one other phlebotomist and handling approximately 70 patients a day (no pediatrics).

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00
