Job Description
The main function of a Certified Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, properly explaining the process of venipuncture, and demonstrating techniques using straight and/or butterfly needles.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate as needed.Update patient information and collect/store specimens as per established protocols.Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Fully understand all physician orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.Package specimens for transport and store specimens according to required temperatures.Accurately label and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes following specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department training sessions.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment required.Minimum of 1 year of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.1-2 years of experience.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with specimen processing is a strong plus.Work Environment
The work environment is a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, requiring adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations. The role involves handling various specimens and requires maintaining specimen integrity during transport. Annual department training sessions are mandatory. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is necessary for updating patient information and managing records.
