Job Description
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role involves blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information. The position requires explaining procedures to patients, demonstrating techniques using needles, matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
+ Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
+ Decontaminate work areas and update patient information.
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients clearly and courteously.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
+ Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department trainings.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
+ Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ 3-5 years of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
+ Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.
+ Customer service skills.
+ Ability to train others on the touch system and administrative tasks.
+ Aptitude to learn and adapt to new technology.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $18.00
