Job Description
The primary role of the Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations. This position is integral in ensuring proper specimen collection, handling, and processing according to established procedures.
ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.Update patient information as necessary.Collect and store specimens following established procedures.Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Understand and follow physicians' orders accurately.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department training sessions.Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to callers.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.0-2 years of experience.Ability to perform 20-25 draws daily.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with pediatric and geriatric patients.Ability to greet patients, key orders into the system, draw samples, and process and pack specimens for shipping.Aptitude for learning new technology, with the potential to train others on the touch system and administrative tasks.One year of phlebotomy experience is a firm requirement.Work Environment
This position is based in a patient service center (PSC). The phlebotomist will typically work alone but may eventually train others on the touch system. The location size and specific standing requirements are not detailed but expect a fast-paced environment. Candidates must present a clean-cut appearance, with no facial tattoos or piercings (except for religious reasons), natural hair color, and coverable body tattoos.
