Job Title: Phlebotomist IJob Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures and ensuring proper patient information updates.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
+ Update patient information and collect/store specimens as per established procedures.
+ Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Understand and follow all physicians' orders accurately.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures.
+ Follow protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
+ Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department training sessions.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (if required).
+ Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
+ Strong customer service skills.
+ Good hygiene and appearance, including clean-cut fingernails.
+ Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changes.
+ Strong processing experience, especially in a busy medical environment.
Work Environment
This role is based at a women's medical center with a busy site handling 110+ draws per day. The team consists of five providers, and the site currently has one computer with two more pending setup. The typical working hours are Monday to Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Friday from 8 AM to 12 PM. The role requires flexibility and the ability to work under pressure due to the dynamic nature of the environment. Strong teammates will support the candidate in this role.
