Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.Understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain the integrity of the specimens.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Essential SkillsValid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in some states).Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.High School Diploma or GED.0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.Strong customer service skills.Work Environment

The position is based in a medium-sized Patient Service Center (PSC). The phlebotomist will perform 20-40 draws daily and will work predominantly standing for the majority of their shift. They will work as part of a team alongside other employees. The first week of employment will include orientation. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
